Obituary of Marjorie S. Brittenham

Marjorie S. Brittenham, 97, of Poughkeepsie, entered into eternal life on Tuesday, May 6, 2025 peacefully at her home in Poughkeepsie, New York.

Born November 21, 1927 in Bryant, Wisconsin, she was the daughter of Emil William Schrader and Elda “Ella” Matilda Pietz.

On June 11, 1960 she married William Robert “Bob” Brittenham in Polar, Wisconsin. He predeceased her on March 17, 2008.

In 1949 she received a Bachelor's Degree in Education from Central State Teachers College, Stevens Point, Wisconsin. She taught elementary school in Portage, Wisconsin Rapids and Shorewood, Wisconsin. She taught for 23 years in the Wappingers Central School District at Vassar Road Elementary School, Kinry Road Elementary School and Brinckerhoff Elementary School. The last 13 years she taught as a first grade teacher at Vassar Road Elementary School, Poughkeepsie, New York. Although she loved teaching and all of her students, she retired from teaching in 1998. She was proud of the fact that she had taught some of her prior students' children.

After her retirement, she spent her time with her grandchildren, caring for them, knitting, sewing, and making crafts for them. She enjoyed spending time with her family during the holidays and spending time with her great-grandchildren. In addition, she and Bob traveled in the Eastern and Midwestern United States researching their family histories. They also enjoyed going into New York City to church and concerts.

Marjorie is survived by her five children, nine grandchildren, four grandchildren-in-laws, and five great-grandchildren: Her daughter, Julie Tuttle and her children, Matthew and Deanna, her son, Paul and Anne Brittenham and their children Sarah, Chloe (Danny Sheehan) and Leda (Eric Marcus), her son Mark Brittenham and Susan Hermiller, her son Peter and Abby Brittenham and their children Joshua (Jennifer Brittenham and great-grandchildren Margo, Levi, Owynn and Zac), Gregory (Kimberly Brittenham and great-granddaughter Henlee) and Jessica Brittenham; her son David Brittenham and Carolyn Summers and their daughter Kate Brittenham.

She is also survived by several cousins, nieces, nephews and other extended family. She is predeceased by her sister Elda Schrader and her two brothers, Arthur Schrader and Emil Schrader.

Calling hours will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, May 16, 2025 at Straub, Catalano & Halvey Funeral Home, 55 East Main Street, Wappingers Falls, New York.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 17, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 55 Wilbur Boulevard, Poughkeepsie, New York.

Burial will follow at the Wappingers Rural Cemetery, Route 9D, Wappingers Falls, New York.
