John J. Jermyn Obituary

John James “Jack” Jermyn, devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and proud veteran, passed away peacefully in his sleep on July 4, 2025 at home. He was 93.

John was born on April 14, 1932, 46th Street in Sunnyside Queens, New York. He attended St. Theresa‘s Grammar School and LaSalle High School in New York City, as well as Fordham University and later graduated from Marist College.

John is survived by his beloved wife, Elizabeth; his loving daughters, Debbie, Maureen and  Maribeth; his loving sons, Michael, Thomas and Patrick; his grandchildren, Jessica Mai, Sean Gyger, Darragh Gyger, Rebekkah Gyger, Abbey Jermyn, Lucie Jermyn, Ivan Jermyn, Ryan Jermyn, Aidan Jermyn, Cameron Nowakowski, Lily Nowakowski and Dylan Nowakowski; his great-grandchildren, Madeleine, Avery, Tristan, Ryker, Nolan, Mason, Fiona, Levi, Winnifred, Reo, Caswell and Moira; as well as many cherished friends.

Jack proudly served his country in the United States Army, stationed in France during the Korean War.  He was a scholar of World War I and World War II, and traveled often into Europe for military commemorative events like the 75th anniversary of D-Day. He was also a member of the Western Front Association.

Jack was a devoted traveler and loved traveling in the United States and Europe, especially France, Italy, Ireland, Belgium, England, Austria, Spain and Germany. He traveled often with his wife and traveling companion, Liz and also great friends, Andy and Ellie DiMarco and George and Karlene Maresco. Jack always had a camcorder and his videos and travelogues are still being enjoyed today.

Jack was a devout Catholic and member of St. Mary’s Church and Mount Alvernia, both in Wappingers Falls.  He supported many Catholic charities around the world. One of his favorite trips was participating in Holy Week in Antigua, Guatemala for his 80th birthday.

Jack loved sports, especially baseball, and was a devoted Brooklyn Dodger fan growing up in New York City. He later supported the Mets and Yankees after moving to Wappingers Falls in the late 50’s, and attended many games.

Jack was a patriotic man and would truly believe it’s not a coincidence that he died on the 4th of July; we don’t either. He always wanted to go out with a bang. He will be truly missed and never forgotten by his family. Jack, you truly were a man you don’t meet every day. Rest in eternal peace and may your strong unwavering strength protect you and all of us.
