Dorothy L. Schmitt, 81, of Wappingers Falls, passed away on July 20, 2025 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie.

Born January 28, 1944, she was the daughter of the late Harry C. Tompkins, Sr. and Ruth Reynolds Tompkins. On May 16, 1965 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Poughkeepsie, she married the love of her life, Gary Schmitt. Gary predeceased her on June 16, 2018.

Dottie was a member of the New Hackensack Reformed Church, where she sang in the choir, participated in the Piggy Bank Bazaar, participated in Birthday Dessert and served in other capacities. She was a member of the New Hackensack Home Bureau and loved doing crafts.

Dottie had worked at IBM for 8 years and left to start her family. She resumed her career as a secretary at the Wappingers Central School District, retiring after 28 and a half years of service.

Survivors include her son, Eric Schmitt and his wife, Krista of Poughkeepsie; grandson Cody Schmitt of Poughkeepsie; grandson Steven Schmitt of North Carolina; brother-in-law Lee Schmitt and his wife, Patricia of Wappingers Falls; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her son, Gary Schmitt, Jr.; her brothers Wayne Tompkins and Harry Tompkins, Jr.; her sister, Evelyn Tompkins; and her sister-in-law, Patty Tompkins.

Visitation will be held on Friday, July 25, 2025 from 10 am to 12 noon at New Hackensack Reformed Church, 1580 Route 376 in Wappingers Falls. A funeral service will follow at 12 noon at the church. Entombment will then follow at Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery, South Avenue in Poughkeepsie.

Memorial donations in Dottie’s name may be made to New Hackensack Reformed Church, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or American Diabetes Association.
