Jose R. Olmo, lovingly known as “Joe, Pa, and Abuelo,” passed away peacefully on August 8, 2025, at the age of 76.
Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Joe was raised in Brooklyn, New York—a place that shaped who he was and about which he loved to share stories of his youth with family and friends.
He graduated from George Westinghouse Career and Technical Education High School, and at 18 returned to Puerto Rico, where he began a dedicated career in technology and manufacturing. He worked first with Timex, then Xerox Puerto Rico, and later joined IBM Puerto Rico in 1977, servicing large corporations and businesses across the island.
In 1983, during the personal computer and semiconductor boom, Joe transferred to IBM’s East Fishkill facility in New York, where he worked with pride and commitment as an equipment technician until his retirement in 2003. That same year, he and his family settled in Wappingers Falls—a community he cherished.
Puerto Rico was also where Joe met the love of his life, Irma Diaz, with whom he built a beautiful life and family. Although Irma undoubtedly has many fans of her cooking, Joe was her biggest, savoring every dish she prepared with such love and care.
In his younger years, Joe was a passionate car enthusiast and enjoyed the thrill of amateur drag racing. He also grew up fishing and boating—his greatest lifelong passion—with a special love for saltwater fishing on the Long Island Sound, a skill and hobby passed down from his parents. Whether casting a line in the early morning or reeling in a catch to share with loved ones, Joe’s warm smile was always part of the experience. He lovingly passed on that joy to his parents, children, and their friends. Known for his quiet nature and exceptional gift for fixing and solving problems—whether it was car repairs or projects around his home and his children’s homes— “Pa” was always ready to lend a hand, anytime, with that same warm smile and never a complaint.
In recent years, his greatest joy was watching his grandchildren play sports, especially soccer, cheering them on with pride and joy.
Joe is survived by his devoted wife, Irma Diaz; his sons, Joel (Deanna), Alex (Paola), and Joseph (Sandra); his cherished grandchildren, Alexander, Jonavan, Adrian, Julian, Jonah, Sebastian, Cristian, and Andre; his loving sister, Adela (Luis); as well as nieces, nephews, cousins, great grandkids(Aaliyah & Rosalie) and extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jose and Adela, and his stepbrother, Josian.
A simple man at heart, Joe’s happiest moments were spent surrounded by his children, grandchildren, and family. He will be remembered on the Long Island Sound, a fishing rod in one hand and a cold Coors Light in the other, his warm smile reflecting the joy of the moment. He will also be remembered enjoying his children and grandchildren, at the table, at the soccer field, savoring one of Irma’s home-cooked meals, and always at the center of the love that bound his family together. His warmth, generosity, and smile will be deeply missed but forever treasured.
