Anna P. Kopchak Obituary

Anna (Popowycz) Kopchak, 77, of Highland, died unexpectedly Saturday, October 25, 2025 in her home. She was born November 2, 1947 in Aschaffenburg, Germany.  She was the daughter of Ivan and Maria (Swerdan) Popowycz.

Anna and her family arrived as immigrants to Ellis Island on the USS General W. G. Haan November 7, 1951.  Her family settled in Bethlehem, PA.

Anna married the love of her life, Fr. Joseph S. Kopchak, on November 5, 1966 at St. Josephat Ukrainian Catholic Church in Bethlehem, PA.  They grew up together in the church from the time Anna arrived in the United States at the age of 4.  They were married for forty two years before his death in 2009.  She served as faithful Matushka alongside him in his priesthood in The Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

Upon Fr. Joseph’s retirement in 2005, they moved to Highland to be with their daughter and her family.  Anna had been a parishioner of St. Gregory the Theologian Orthodox Church ever since.

Her pride in her Ukrainian heritage was ever present.   She created beautiful pysanky, (Ukrainian Easter eggs), Ukrainian decorated ceramics, and embroidered items. With love, she passed down her cultural and religious customs, traditions, and cuisine to her grandchildren.  Of all her titles- daughter, sister, wife, Matushka, Mama etc.,  her favorite was Baba. It is no wonder she was named after the patron saint of grandmothers.

Anna will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Tania Metz and her husband Steven of Highland; grandchildren Nicholas, Basil, and Nadia Metz;  her sister Irene McKittrick  of Center Valley, PA; brothers Joseph Popowycz and his wife Teresa of Mountain Top, PA,  Michael Popowycz and his wife Laurie of Mooresville, NC;  Nieces Jennifer and Katherine Popowycz;  Nephews Matthew McKittrick (and Kaitlyn), Nicholas, Joseph, Jacob (and Kathleen), and Joshua Popowycz;  great nieces Cameryn and Caroline McKittrick.

Anna’s family will receive their friends on Sunday, November 2, 2025 from 5 to 7 p.m. at St. Gregory the Theologian Orthodox Church, 1500 Route 376, Wappingers Falls, NY 12590. A Panikhida (memorial prayer service) will follow at 7 p.m.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday November 3rd at St Gregory’s.  Interment will follow in St. Josephat Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery, Hellertown, PA.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Gregory the Theologian Orthodox Church, 1500 Route 376, Wappingers Falls, NY 12590.
