Phyllis M. Sanfilippo Campala Obituary
Phyllis May Campala, a woman who never met a stranger and turned every checkout line into a social gathering, passed away on January 12, 2026. Born on May 17, 1941, Phyllis lived a life defined by an extraordinary "spark"—a unique knack for befriending others and radiating a joyful, effortless love.
On October 15, 1961, she married the love of her life, John Joseph Campala. Their 64-year marriage was nothing short of exceptional; they were a true partnership in every sense of the word. Their devotion was such that in over six decades, they were almost never separated, with only perhaps six weeks in total ever spent away from each other’s side. Their deep, constant connection was the steady heartbeat of their family.
That warmth naturally extended to her large and close-knit extended family. For Phyllis, "family" embraced her siblings, their spouses, and all of her nieces and nephews. Family gatherings were such a natural, constant part of her life that there was never a need for a formal reunion—they were simply always together. These bonds were famously cemented during summer vacations at Strawberry Hill on Great Sacandaga Lake, where Phyllis, her siblings, and all their families would rent out every single cottage to ensure the entire crew spent every moment side-by-side.
Phyllis’s true legacy is the vast network of lifelong friends she gathered at every turn. Whether she was running errands or traveling, people were naturally drawn to her. She had a rare way of making everyone feel seen, heard, and trusted; strangers would often find themselves opening their hearts to her before they even reached the front of the grocery line. To Phyllis, everyone was a potential friend, and she took great care to stay in touch with the many people she met along the way.
She is survived by her devoted husband, John; her four children, Antonio, Lisa, Gina, and Avenue; her granddaughter, Marisa (daughter of Gina); and her son-in-law, Curt (husband of Avenue). She will be deeply missed by the countless friends—old and new—whose lives were brightened by her spirit.
Phyllis' services were privately held in her home at her passing. The family's wish is for anyone wanting to honor her is to please plant a tree in her name.
