John F. Vogt Obituary

John F. Vogt Obituary

John Vogt, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, educator, and lifelong learner, passed away on March 30, 2026, at the age of 82 in Rhinebeck, New York, leaving behind a legacy of love, dedication, and quiet wisdom.

John was born on May 15, 1943, in Manhattan, New York, to the late John N. Vogt and Frances Vogt. He spent his early years in the Bronx alongside his siblings, James, Susan and Patricia and carried his New York roots with him throughout his life.

He attended Bishop Dubois high school in Manhattan before earning a degree in Political Science from Manhattan College. Following college, John worked in several fields, before ultimately discovering his true calling in teaching and social work.

John became a Social Studies and Special Education teacher and taught at St. Simon Stock School in the Bronx, where he made a lasting impact on his students. It was there that he met the love of his life, Margaret. Their shared passion for education brought them together in 1975, and their bond grew into a lifelong partnership. They married in their early 30s and built a beautiful life together, raising their two children, Jennifer and Brian.

In 1985, John and his family settled in Wappingers Falls, New York, where they created a warm and happy home. Some of his most treasured memories were spent at the Jersey Shore with his family, where the ocean brought him a deep sense of peace and belonging.

John was a proud and loving grandfather. He is survived by his daughter, Jennifer and her husband Dan Axtmann, and their sons, Dylan and Evan; and by his son, Brian Vogt, and Brian’s daughter, Quinn Vogt, who brought him great joy.

He is also survived by his siblings: his brother James Vogt and his wife Judy of the Bronx; his sister Susan and her husband Kevin Kiernan of Stony Point, New York, along with their daughter Tara; and his sister Patricia Vogt of the Bronx. He leaves behind many extended family members and friends whose lives he touched.

John was predeceased by his beloved wife, Margaret, and his parents, John N. and Frances Vogt.

John had a deep appreciation for life’s simple pleasures and the people he shared them with. He was an avid New York Yankees fan, a true movie buff, and had a lifelong love of music—especially The Beatles. He enjoyed all kinds of sports and activities, and some of his most meaningful moments came from supporting his children as they grew up. He was often present on the sidelines, serving as an assistant coach, mentor, and steady source of encouragement for many of their teams.

He also had a special fondness for animals and shared his home with several dogs and cats over the years. He enjoyed watching films and television and had a passion for travel, visiting Europe multiple times, exploring much of the Caribbean, and taking a cross-country road trip.

Among his proudest personal accomplishments was hiking down and back up the Grand Canyon in a single day—an experience he later learned was strongly discouraged, but one he remained proud to have achieved.

John was raised Roman Catholic and carried with him a strong sense of values, including honesty, thoughtfulness, and a grounded perspective on life. He believed deeply in self-awareness and often shared this advice: to be sure of yourself before trying to help others.

John will be remembered for his steady presence, his devotion to his family, and the meaningful life he built. His legacy will live on in the lives of those who knew and loved him.
