Mark Smith, MD, a beloved husband, father, son, and brother passed away on Friday, May 8, 2026, at the age of 75. A devoted physician, Mark combined profound skill with a compassionate heart, dedicating over 46 years to the well-being of his patients, his community, and his family.

Early Life and Education

Born on May 3, 1951, in Kansas City, Kansas, Mark moved to Los Angeles, California, at the age of three. He attended high school at Midland School, an exclusive private college preparatory boys school in Santa Barbara county, California where he was class valedictorian.

Mark went on to attend Pomona College, where his exceptional performance led to medical school acceptance during only his third year. He earned his medical degree from Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee, in 1976.

A Distinguished Career

Dr. Smith completed residency training in Emergency Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center at Mount Zion and in General Surgery at Los Angeles County King/Drew Medical Center. Board Certified in Emergency Medicine, Mark practiced in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, New York, and California. Throughout his nearly five-decade career, he was defined by his professional integrity and an unwavering commitment to excellence.

Personal Interests

Mark had a creative spirit and was a lover of the arts. His favorite music ranged from classical to Motown, but no music brought him more joy than the school concerts of his children. He was drawn to the peace and beauty of nature, ponds, birds, and greenery with one of his favorite places being Niagara Falls. In his youth, he enjoyed playing basketball, and his love of the sport continued as a dedicated Lakers basketball fan. He loved to travel and experience the cultures of new people and places around the world. 

Family and Legacy

Though he was a pillar of his professional community, Mark’s heart belonged to his family, who will miss him beyond measure. He is survived by his wife, Kate Smith; his children, Kristen Smith, Holly Smith, Blake Smith, and Haley Smith; and his parents, Reatha and Owen Smith. He also leaves behind his sisters, Pamela Williams and Lisa Gumbs; brothers-in-law, Stanley Williams and Alan Gumbs; as well as a cherished extended family of aunts, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Mark leaves behind a circle of close friends and colleagues who, alongside his family, will miss his presence, his wisdom, and his warmth dearly.
