James H. "Jim" Smith Obituary
James “Jim” Smith, of Wappingers Falls, New York, passed away after a brief illness on July 4, 2026. He was 69 years old. Jim was born in 1957 in Greenpoint Brooklyn, New York, to James Smith and Helen Smith (née Ensmenger). An only child, Jim was predeceased by both of his parents.
From an early age, Jim learned the value of working with his hands from his father, who had a talent for construction and fixing just about anything. Those skills stayed with Jim throughout his life. As a young man, he enjoyed working on cars, a lifelong passion that eventually led to a career with the New York State Department of Transportation, where he proudly served as a State School Bus Safety Inspector. He had a special love for classic cars, especially his prized 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS.
Jim met the love of his life, Maria Smith (née Galeotafiore), in their Brooklyn neighborhood. They married and shared 42 wonderful years together, building a life filled with love, laughter, and devotion. Together they welcomed their son, Jimmy, whom Jim adored. Some of his happiest memories were the many fishing trips and father-and-son adventures they shared. Jim was heartbroken by Jimmy’s passing only 10 months prior and carried his love for him always.
In 2007, Jim and Maria moved their family from Brooklyn to Wappingers Falls, New York, where they made their home.
Jim had a sharp wit and an unforgettable sense of humor that brought smiles to those around him. He enjoyed watching car restoration shows, listening to rock music (especially Ozzy Osbourne) and even named one of his dogs Ozzy.
Jim is survived by his beloved wife, Maria; his father-in-law, John Galeotafiore; his brothers-in-law, Michael Galeotafiore (Jennifer) and John Galeotafiore (Elizabeth); and his five nieces and nephews, all of whom will cherish his memory.
Jim will be remembered for his love of family, his mechanical skills, and his quick humor. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
