Alexander W. Hubner, 101, of Wappingers Falls, NY passed away peacefully at home on Friday, August 21, 2026.

Al was born in Brooklyn, NY to Alexander W. Hubner, Sr. and Helen (Haferkorn) Hubner on June 29, 1925. A devoted husband, family man, and a proud World War II veteran we celebrate his lifetime of dedication to his family, community, and country.

In 1943, at the age of 18, Al was drafted into the U.S. Army and was eventually assigned to the 94th Infantry Division. On August 6, 1944, the 94th Division left NYC on the Queen Mary and sailed to Scotland. They remained in the UK for about a month and then shipped to Utah Beach, Normandy, France arriving 94 days after D-Day.

Shortly after landing in France, Al was identified as having German language fluency and subsequently was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 376 Infantry Regiment, Battalion Headquarters Intelligence. Al fought and conducted intelligence patrols and interrogations in France, Germany and Czechoslovakia.

Al was promoted to sergeant, fought in the Ardennes, Rhineland, Central Europe and northern France campaigns as well as the occupation of Czechoslovakia after the war ended. He received the Bronze Star and is most proud of his Combat Infantry badge. He was honorably discharged in February 1946.

Upon returning home, Al completed his college education in the evening at City College of New York while working full time. He received his degree in Business Administration in 1950. He continued working in New York City before joining IBM Poughkeepsie NY in 1951. He was eventually promoted to IBM World Trade where he had assignments in Scotland, England, India, Japan, Argentina, and Brazil. Al loved to embrace and understand the cultures of the countries he visited.  Al retired from IBM in 1988 with 37 years of service.

Al married Virginia F. Langton on July 27, 1952 and maintained a loving and supportive relationship of 72 years. Ginny, his lifelong partner, sadly passed in October 2024. Together they raised four children – Kurt Hubner, Steven (Jana) Hubner, Linda (Doug) Hubner, and Andrew (Gwen) Hubner.  Al worked full-time but was also very engaged in family life and volunteer services.  He taught accounting at Dutchess Community College, volunteered with his son’s and daughter’s Scout troop, was a lifelong member of IOOF Lafayette Lodge 18 and VFW Post 5913, and was involved with the Knights of Columbus and the Elk Lodge. Additionally, through the years he held several positions with the WWII 94th Infantry Division national and state chapters in which he and his wife were actively involved. Most recently Al was celebrated and honored on his 100th birthday by VFW Post 5913, IOOF Lafayette Lodge 18, and was honorary grand marshal for the Town of Wappinger 150th sesquicentennial anniversary parade.

Al and Ginny had many adventures as a couple over the years, as well as with their friends and family. Summer vacations on Long Island, family clam bakes, living two years in England and Scotland while working for IBM, touring the US and Europe, vacationing and visiting with their children, annual army reunions, gourmet club, museums, theater performances, and numerous activities.

Al’s life is a powerful example of service, loyalty, perseverance, love, and commitment. From his Army service in Europe during World War II to his years at City College of New York, nearly 4 decades with IBM and the family he and Ginny built together, Al has lived with purpose, steadiness, and heart. Across 101 years, he showed those around him the lasting meaning of duty faithfully carried, work honestly done, and love generously given. Life is made of moments and memories and the richness of life experiences. Al had much to celebrate and be proud of. He has left a big impact on his family and all the people he met and helped throughout the years. He truly embodied the adage of a life well lived and was one of the few remaining Greatest Generation WWII Veterans.

We would like to especially thank the Castle Point Veterans Affairs Home-Based Care Program – Dr. Rose, Nurse Liza, and PT Brian for managing Al’s medical care, and also Millie’s Home Care Services who provided live-in caregivers Shiryl and John. They provided outstanding care for Al and made his last days very comfortable.  Thanks to Micah, Anthony, SallyAnn from Hudson Valley Concierge for providing thoughtful ambulette service in the last years.

Family will receive their friends at Straub, Catalano & Halvey Funeral Home in Wappingers Falls on Thursday, September 3, 2026 with visitation from 10:00 am to 11:30 followed by funeral services. Interment with honors will follow at Wappingers Rural Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to one of the following organizations on behalf of Al Hubner - Zion Episcopal Church in Wappingers Falls, Meals on Wheels of Wappingers Falls, or Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia.
