Obituary of William J. Thompson
William J. Thompson entered into eternal rest on Sunday February 8, 2015. He was born on March 12, 1938 in Amenia, NY to Robert and Frances Nelligan Thompson.
Bill graduated from Webatuck High School in 1956. After graduating, he worked at the family business alongside his brother, Harry at the Flying A Gas Station in Amenia, NY. On October 21, 1956 he married Virginia (Ginny) Clark and together they raised 4 wonderful children. He spent 8 years in the Naval Reserves. He retired with the rank of Captain from the New York State Correctional Facility at Downstate in 1991, after 32 years of service.
Bill was a communicant of St. Mary's Church in Wappingers Falls. He enjoyed golfing, reading, travel, and his 10 grandchildren.
Bill was the youngest of 10 children and he was predeceased by his parents; his sisters, Marion Epstein, Jessie Puggelli, Jean Bailey, Patricia Ahearn and Eileen Chadwell; and his brothers, Robert, James and Harry Thompson
In addition to his loving wife of 58 years, he is survived by his sister, Frances Lynch of Sarasota, FL; his children, Terry (Leonard) LaPoint of Liverpool, NY, Tim of Falls City, TX, Dan (Mary Ellen) of Wappingers Falls and Ben (Karolyn) of Wappingers Falls; grandchildren, Billy, Michael, Sean, Joey, Ryan, Taylor, Chiara and Madison Thompson, and Jillian and Oliver LaPoint; as well as many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to send a special thank you to the following for their kindness and care of Bill: Mobile Life Ambulance Service, the staff and doctors of Vassar Brothers Medical Center Emergency Department, Father Heston, and Father Cruz at St. Mary's Church.
Family will receive friends on Friday, February 13, 2015 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Straub, Catalano & Halvey Funeral Home, 55 E. Main Street in Wappingers Falls.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Saturday, February 14th at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, Clinton Street in Wappingers Falls. Interment will take place in the springtime in St. Mary's Cemetery, Wappingers Falls.
In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to St. Mary's Church or Mt. Alvernia Retreat Center.
