Kevin and Harlan,
I only recently heard the very sad news of your mother's passing. I am so sorry for your loss.
Even though I didn't know your mom really well, I do know that her warm, caring and gracious nature was genuine.
What I will remember most about her are her voice and her smile!
Your mom lived a rich, full and abundant life. May this bring you great comfort and may God be with you both, now and always...

I had the pleasure of being in Mrs. Roberts Bookkeeping Class my senior year at Poughkeepsie High School in 1990. It's because of her that I majored in Business Administration in undergrad. She was the best teacher that I ever had in high school and in college. The family will be in my prayers.

Dear Kevin , Your Mom was an exceptionally nice woman to a bunch of guys who tore up her back yard from Spring to Fall for years in their versions of the World Series and Super Bowl. We made far more noise than we needed to in the process and yet she never once complained and frequently checked on us to see if we were okay. I was saddened at her passing and wish both you and your family the deepest sympathies. Please know that many good thoughts go your way in spite of the decades since we last spoke. My brother Rich also sends his best to you and Harlan. He too recalls the games at your home and especially the tree in center field that he ran into more than a few times.
You should be extremely proud of your Mom and her extraordinary accomplishments. Hopefully that will help you get through these tough times. best regards, Marty

It was a honor to have Mrs. Roberts as my teacher for bookkeeping. She was strict with love! I was Mr. Fields secretary at Poughkeepsie High School and she told me to dress my best! The last time I ran into her was at Mrs. Penny Lewis husband's funeral and as I hugged her I told her how sharp she was dressed! People use to think we were related because we had the same last name! She was always smiling and will truly be missed! Her legacy will remain forever.

Lorraine has been such a wonderful friend, a source of good cheer in any situation. Any time I saw her she asked after my children, who she had known when they were students at Poughkeepsie High School, and particularly after our daughter Krista who started her teaching career in the Poughkeepsie schools. I will miss her greatly, but her smile and words of good will stay with me always!

Lorraine was a good friend and supporter of my work as a historian for about 25 years. She was the first contact I made with the local community when I first arrived in Dutchess County as a young, married woman with pre-school children, and what a phenomenal, caring, focused, genial, and effective guide she was to me and so many others. We co-authored an article together, worked on Black History Committee projects, and she supported every publication and public project I produced. Lorraine's reach as a leader extended well beyond African-American circles (where it was incomparable), to the larger Dutchess County community and even to NYS since she served on educational committees in Albany. I don't ever recall her without a smile, even as she reined in a meeting that was veering into the tangential! Such poise. Such a positive presence. A force for good. Always professional. Always welcoming and warm. Always dedicated to excellence. Always generous with her time and resource networks. Wise. Fun. Her passing leaves a real vacuum in my life and in this community's life. I will truly, truly miss her.
