Obituary of Salvatore Della Calce

Salvatore "Sammy" Della Calce, a resident of Wappingers Falls and former longtime Yonkers resident, entered into rest Thursday, May 10, 2012 at his home. He was 89. Son of the late Carlo and Josephine (Cerasulo) Della Calce, he was born April 30, 1923 in Yonkers. On May 8, 1949 in Yonkers, he married the former Carmella "Mae" Catania. Mrs. Della Calce preceded him in death on May 2, 1988. He was a graduate of Saunders Trade and Technical School in Yonkers. Sam went on to serve his country during World War II in the United States Army. He was honorably discharged in December of 1945. Together with his brother, he operated Ashburton Fruit and Vegetable Market in Yonkers until his retirement. Sam enjoyed cooking and tending to his vegetable garden. He was an avid baseball fan. He was very family oriented and treasured time spent with them. He is survived by his children, Richard T. Della Calce of Mahopac, Diane Brandon of Highland and Janice Bopp and her husband, Gregg of Wappingers Falls; his brother, George Della Calce of Yonkers; his sister, Margie Hebert of Wappingers Falls; his grandchildren, Richard C. Della Calce, Jessica Della Calce, Stacey Dattorre, Alicia "Leeshie" Brandon-Turner, Amanda "Mandy" Bopp and Alexandra "Allie" Bopp; his great-grandson, Brandon Thomas Turner; several nieces and nephews; and his canine companion of six years, Bella, who he named and never left his side. In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by his sisters Lucille Sava, Theresa Mannuccia, and Mary DeBlasi and his brothers, Vincent "Jim," Gabriel, Tony and an infant brother, Anthony. Family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 15, 2012 from 4 to 9 p.m. at Straub, Catalano & Halvey Funeral Home, 55 East Main Street, Wappingers Falls, NY 12590. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 16 at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery, Hastings-on-Hudson. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
