Obituary of Muriel G. Backman
Muriel Backman, a six year resident of Dutchess County and formerly of Thornwood, entered into rest Tuesday, December 12, 2012 at Elant at Wappingers Falls. She was 89.
Daughter of the late Carlton and Ada Borden, she was born September 13, 1923 in New Haven, Connecticut. She proudly served her county during World War II and was honorably discharged on May 25, 1948. She received the World War II Victory Medal, the American Theatre Ribbon, and the Good Conduct Medal.
She married Lloyd Laurie Backman on February 11, 1951 in North White Plains. Mr. Backman preceded her in death on September 12, 1996. Muriel worked several part time jobs to help support her family. Most importantly, she was a devoted wife and mother. She enjoyed bingo, flowers and plants, as well as scrapbooking.
Survivors include her sons, Don L. Backman and his wife, Kathy of Wappingers Falls and Gary Backman and his wife, Sharon of Yorktown Heights; and her grandchildren, Daniel C. and Kevin A. Backman both of Yorktown Heights.
Family will receive friends on Thursday, December 13, 2012 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Straub, Catalano & Halvey Funeral Home, 55 East Main Street, Wappingers Falls.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, December 14 at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Kenisco Cemetery in Valhalla.
