Obituary of William D. Haggerty
William "Bill" Haggerty of Wappingers Falls entered into eternal life on Tuesday, March 5, 2013 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center. He was 83.
Bill was born in Albany on June 29, 1929 to George E. and Bertha Duer Haggerty, where he was raised and educated. Bill served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean War. He was also a longtime volunteer fireman and Fire Commissioner for the New Hamburg Fire District, a member of the Wappingers Falls Knights of Columbus Council #1646, and served for many years as an adult advisor to the CYO Teen Federation.
Bill was employed as an operations manager for IBM/Control Data Corporations for 40 years. Following his retirement from Control Data, he worked for 17 years for the Archdiocese of New York at St. Mary's Church in Wappingers Falls.
On May 7, 1950, Bill married Joan Schewe at St. Patrick's Church in Albany. In addition to his wife of 62 years, he is survived by his five children and their families: Michael (Elizabeth) Haggerty of Olney, MD and their children, Matthew, Katie and Kevin; Mark (Linda) Haggerty of Lagrangeville and their children, Christopher (Allyson), Sean (fiancé, Jennifer Lamb) and Casey; Jeffrey (Patricia) Haggerty of Boca Raton, FL and their children, Brendan, Meghan, Elizabeth and Christopher; Terrence (Rhoda Valentine) Haggerty of Plainville, CT and their son, Patrick; Kathleen (Jason) Haggerty Roebuck of Wilbraham, MA and their daughter, Abigail; and several nieces and nephews and their families. They will miss his humor, laughter and the love he had for his family.
In addition to his parents, Bill was predeceased by his brothers, George E. Haggerty and his wife, Phyllis Nantista Haggerty, and Andrew C. Haggerty and his wife, Anne Marie Lynch Haggerty.
Family will receive their friends on Sunday, March 10, 2013 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Straub, Catalano & Halvey Funeral Home, 55 E. Main Street, Wappingers Falls, NY 12590.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Monday, March 11 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, Clinton Street in Wappingers Falls. Interment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Wappingers Falls.
