I still remember the Turkish border guards quizzing me on the birth date on Bill's passport, not believing he could possibly be 67 or even within 20 years of it. On the other side, the Georgians all knew him from seeing us on TV for the past year. Hearing his name bellowed across the Istanbul airport terminal (when a security guard found his wallet) and on the streets of Kutaisi is one of my fondest memories of that trip.

I have such lovely remembrances of singing with Bill in Cappella Festiva and Hudson Valley Gilbert & Sullivan. He was such a positive person, always with a smile and warm greeting. He was a talented, solid and reliable performer and it was a gift to share the stage with him for so many years. Rest well, Bill.

Mr. Brooks wasn't my 6th grade teacher at Evans School(1966),but I couldn't wait for recess because he let us
girls play ball and treated us equally with the boys on the field. A lot of the success I've enjoyed in sports is due to the support and confidence I got from Mr. Brooks. My sincere condolences on his passing.

To the family and friends of Mr. Brooks, my all time favorite teacher: I am so grateful for my 4th grade teacher, Mr. Brooks, who in an elementary school filled with aging spinster teachers, was young, male, African American, compassionate, intelligent, cultured, kind and open minded. He introduced me to classical music, speed reading (!), Camille St. Saens' Carnival of the Animals (where I portrayed a swan to his choreography) and gave me a deeper understanding of "To Kill a Mockingbird," a movie I saw too young, in the back of my parents' station wagon at a drive in.
Rest in Peace, William Brooks Jr. (1928 - 2014)

Dear Mrs. Brooks and family,
Your husband was my 4th grade teacher at South Avenue School in Beacon, 1964-1965. To this day, when I am asked the name of my favorite teacher, it is first and foremost, Mr. Brooks. He was my first male teacher, my first African American teacher, and the first who exposed me to a world of larger ideas expressed by music and culture. When the school presented its end of year class performances, while other grades put on plays dedicated to proper grammar, your husband choreographed and had our entire class enact Camille Saint Saens "Carnival of the Animals." I and another student, Jan Hewes, were "teacher's pets" of Mr. Brooks, and we were chosen to be the swans for the pageant--a role that I treasure to this day and list as one of my most treasured accomplishments. We often came to school a bit early, and he would play classical music for us before school started. I remember that he took the four highest achieving students in his class that year to lunch at the Alps Sweet Shop for lunch--me, Jan, Darcell Powell and Barbara Pendelton--and we felt so proud and grown up taking lunch with him. I even remember the walk there along Cliff Street and the feeling I had at being so honored.
Most important, as a little white girl who endured neighborhood taunts due to a a best friend in second grade who was African American, and who turned to Mr. Brooks to understand some of the subtleties of "To Kill a Mockingbird" after seeing it and not quite comprehending its significance, I am grateful for having such a kind, compassionate and understanding teacher at such a young, impressionable age. Thank you, Mr. Brooks.
Warm condolences for your loss, and with gratitude for my short, but significant time under his influence,
Bebe Johnson

Dear Mrs Brooks and Family
I am sorry to hear of the passing of Mr Brooks! I had him as a 4th grade teacher at South Ave in Beacon. I can honestly say that thru all my years of education he was one of the best teachers I had! He inspired you to learn more and more and in 1964 for a 4th grader the world was really starting to change. I did a report on DrKing when he won Nobel Peace Prize and he inspired me to continue on and present to the class!
I am sure that many others Mr Brooks so inspired but he along with my parents taught me that "all men are equal"!
God Bless Him

Mrs. Brooks,
My deepest condolences to you. Both of you had a very positive impact on me as a student. You were my first grade teacher before becoming Mrs. Brooks and your husband was my sixth grade teacher. I have been teaching for 28 years now and had the pleasure of knowing Mr. Brooks' brother as we sat on committees in Millerton. You are both fondly remembered for sharing a love for learning.
Sincerely,

I always loved singing with Bill.
When I was in a play a number of years ago he offered, as a friend, though he was a professional photographer, to come take photos of me for publicity.
We spent many lovely hours together over the years.

It is with sadness to hear of Bill's departure. I know from my years singing with Bill in the Bardavon Opera Chorus (circa 1983-90), The Kartuli Ensemble and also the Hudson Valley Gilbert & Sullivan Society that his life was full blessed. Bill's influence extended far and wide; I recall his stories of teaching and mentoring young students. Bill was always a welcomed voice and spirit in our years together in the early Kartuli Ensemble days. Always a Renaissance man, Bill could be a man's man, a devoted partner, a scholar, conversationalist, and did it all with a lovely aplomb.
I have developed a personal ritual when someone who is or was close to me dies, first influenced by a wonderful instructor and mentor, Dr. Wincenz, Professor of Music at Buffalo State College. As I dwell on my time with Bill, Dvorjak's "New World Symphony", Largo section, starts going through my head, and I become filled with the emotion of my living days with Bill and what it might mean to be finally called home to a spirit world we living mortals can only imagine. I suspect Bill, in his dual role as music enthusiast and teacher, would knowingly agree. Welcome home, Bill. Mrahvalzhamier.

I was a sixth grade student of Mr. Brooks in 1979. He had a huge impact on me, as I'm sure many of my class mates. I still remember some of his stories, and how he gave me support and praise for my running ability. He was a wonderful teacher and a class act. He will be missed, and I will never forget him. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. I believe he is now touching more hearts in heaven.
