Dearest Elle,
So sorry for the passing of a dear friend, Basil. Will always treasure the memory of our good times together, his always bright smile, and spirit. our frequent visits, and playing golf. He was such a good golfer. We now have someone new to look up to in prayer with the Good Lord.
With our love and prayers , always,
Dodi and Loreto.

Basil Moschowsky
When I arrived to serve at St.Gregory’s in the summer of 1978, Basil Moschowsky was the parish’s established choir director. Like many parishioners at that time of St.Gregory’s early years he gave freely of his time and talent. Without formal musical training, Basil learned basic pitches, and with appropriate instructions guided the choir unfailingly in everything laid out by the pastor. This obedience formed under Father Tom Hopko remained Basil’s style when I came, making my transition easy and productive. Our alliance became natural, and we could read each other’s signals. When Basil didn’t direct he was cleaning bathrooms, changing paper supplies, handling candles, organizing many practical and technical things around church — not to speak of repairing all our fine watches with micro tools in his Santa’s workshop!
Once I learned that Basil had a long one hour trip to church, I tried not to bother him when doing a small memorial service or blessing. Then if he learned that I had served a memorial he chastised me (rightly) for not calling him. I said: “Basil, you live an hour away and you work; it’s only a twenty minute service!” His answer: “You let ME decide if it’s too far!”
When his health was good, it was unthinkable for Basil to miss a single service, he never even considered a substitute until he allowed us to slowly cultivate a cadre of other directors to step in when it got difficult and his hearing was failing.
A faithful IBMer, upon retirement Basil became even more active in church, and for me, a faithful ally warning me long in advance about dwindling supplies or needed repairs. This was not simply about noticing a few missing details, but it revealed a person totally “at home” in church, and being at home, always knowing what the house needs next. I could not imagine Basil simply “attending” a service and leaving as if the church needs were someone else’s problem. Basil saw everything as his concern, and what is more he NEVER, virtually never, faulted anyone for anything undone, but only strived to figure out how he could fix it!
That pure and direct heart could no doubt pose a challenge to dear Eleanor, who probably alone of all woman was suited to handle Basil’s occasional stubborn side. She understood this man and clearly loved him!
He died as he lived, peaceably among men. Those of us who know Basil will weep no doubt many times when we walk though the church precincts, but his memory will fill us with light and joy! He would be telling us now: don’t forget to take out the garbage. And order candles, don’t put it off !
Make the saints happy, Basil! You can finally put away your watchmaker tools, Time is now one glorious heavenly TODAY!
