Joan Haggerty

Obituary of Joan M. Haggerty

Joan M. Schewe Haggerty 87,  entered into eternal rest on Friday November 9, 2018 in her home with family members at her side.

She was born on March 19, 1931 in Albany NY, daughter of Charles F. and Catherine Wilomena (Minnie) Swart Schewe.

She married William Duer Haggerty on May 7, 1950 at St Patrick’s Church, Albany. Bill predeceased her on March 5, 2013 after 63 years of marriage.  Joan is also predeceased by her great grand-daughter Lily Raye Haggerty (Sean and Jennifer) on December 2, 2017.

Joan was a wife, mother, grandmother and a great grandmother and she loved each of those roles.  Put an infant in her arms and a smile came across her face.   She made our house a home:  cooking meals, crocheting Christmas stocking for each new addition to the family and working on her puzzles . She was involved in scouting (both boys and girls), St. Mary’s Mothers Guild, CYO Teen Federation advisor,  Catholic Daughters and the Altar Rosary Society.   In 1974, Joan was one of 9 founding women to start Meals on Wheels in Wappingers Falls.  She later received recognition for all her years of service from the Business and Professional Association of Wappingers Falls.  She also faithfully visited those in local nursing homes every Monday for years. She loved her Catholic faith and was an active member of her parish her whole life. She leaves many good friends at St. Mary’s Church in Wappingers Falls.

Joan is survived by her 5 children and their families, Michael (Elizabeth) Haggerty of Silver Spring MD and family Matthew (Jenn , James), Katie (Nick),  Kevin (Kate , Victoria & Madeleine);   Mark (Linda) Haggerty of LaGrangeville NY and  family Christopher (Allyson, Kayla & Colin), Sean (Jen) and Casey;  Jeffrey (Patricia) Haggerty of Boca Raton Fl, and family Brendan, Elizabeth, Meghan & Christopher;  Terrence (Rhoda) Haggerty of Plainville CT and son Patrick;   Kathleen (Jason) Haggerty Roebuck of Wilbraham MA and daughter Abigail and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, parents, and great grand daughter, Joan was predeceased by her sisters Anna Schewe Dings and her husband Lester, Eleanor Schewe Kelley and her husband George, her brothers Charles Schewe and wife Nancy, Bill Schewe and wife Martha and Raymond Schewe and wife Angeline.
