Dorcie L. Kuhns, a longtime resident of the Town of Poughkeepsie, entered into rest Friday, December 21, 2018 at his home. He was 88.

Son of the late Charles R. and Martha Deblair Kuhns, he was born February 5, 1930 in Aurora, Illinois. He attended the University of Illinois and met the love of his life, the former Carol Ann Gaffney, on a blind date. They were married on March 1, 1951 at St. Sebastian’s Church in Milwaukie, Wisconsin. Mrs. Kuhns preceded him in death on July 26, 2012, after over 61 years of marriage.

In 1950, Dorcie proudly enlisted and served his country in the United States Air Force; he was honorably discharged in 1954. He went on to work at IBM and had a successful career there of over 40 years. He retired in 1988 as an engineer. After retirement, he enjoyed a part-time job at Route 9 Lamp & Light, restoring antique fixtures and performing lamp repairs. He was involved in the Kiwanis Club and was a board member of The Friends of Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery. Dorcie also enjoyed working outdoors and gardening. After retirement, he enjoyed traveling with his wife in their RV, including 11 cross country trips.

Survivors include his daughters, Mary Carol Kuhns and her partner, David Maserjian of Poughkeepsie, Susan Marie Grundon and her partner, Dan Crandell of Pleasant Valley, Catherine Ann Crum and her husband Frank of Cooperstown and Amy Jayne Noble and her husband, Tim of Watertown; his eight grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren.

In addition to his beloved wife, he was predeceased by his “fifth child”, his dog New Years, as well as his sister, Veanne.

The family would like to sincerely thank the VA Healthcare system and Hudson Valley Hospice for their compassion and support, as well as his caregivers Derrant and Stephanie who took such excellent care of him in his final months of life.
