Obituary of James J. Cunningham

James J. “Jim” Cunningham, a resident of Wappingers Falls, entered into rest Sunday, November 22, 2020 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie. He was 81. Born in Flushing, Queens, he was the son of the late Malvern Hill and Margaret M. Lane Cunningham. He resided for a time in the Bronx, Albany, Coxsackie, Hudson, Kingston, Plattekill and then to Wappingers Falls. He worked at Fishkill Correctional Facility where he was a security guard for almost 16 years. He was the secretary-treasurer of Local 119 Retirees Union, Council 82 for many years. He attended St. Mary’s Church in Wappingers Falls for over 40 years. In his later years he earned a black belt in karate. Survivors include his beloved wife, Kathy Grace; daughter, Katherine-Margaret and her husband, Frank DiGiamo; son, James Patrick and his significant other, Lisa Pensiero; granddaughter, Heather; great-granddaughter, Aliviana; brother-in-law, Karl Bowers and his wife, Olga and her son, Max; nieces, Noreen, Julie, Debbie, and Kelly; and nephews, Gary, Mal and Ned as well as their children. Family will receive their friends on Saturday, November 28, 2020 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Straub, Catalano & Halvey Funeral Home, 55 E. Main Street, Wappingers Falls, NY 12590. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. following on Saturday at St. Mary’s Church, Clinton Street in Wappingers Falls. Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Wappingers Falls. Masks must be worn and social distancing practiced during all services. A limited amount of guests will be allowed inside for the duration of funeral home and church services.
