Obituary of Norma J. Sampson
Norma J. Sampson of New Hamburg entered into rest surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday, October 6, 2021 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie, after a brief illness. She was 85.
Daughter of the late Percy and Theola Brower Southwell, she was born on July 2, 1936 in Saint Augustine, Florida. She married Herbert G. Sampson on April 25, 1959 at the Zion Chapel in New Hamburg; Mr. Sampson preceded her in death, passing January 13, 1979.
Norma worked for Sheafe Road Elementary School before enjoying a long career as a supervisor in various locations of Off Track Betting, until her retirement. Norma was a longtime member of the New Hamburg Yacht Club Ladies’ Auxiliary. She and her friends would play dominos at the club every Thursday. She loved spending time with her friends and family, especially her grandkids. Norma was also a lifelong member of St. Nicholas-on-the-Hudson Church in New Hamburg.
Survivors include her daughters, Bonnie Johnson and her husband, James of Bridgeville, DE, and Wendy Zinko and her husband, Joe of Wallkill; grandchildren, Emily Johnson, Ryan Johnson and his fiancée, Jessica Sciarrone, Lindsay Zinko and her partner, Everett VanOrden, and John Zinko; several nieces and nephews; and many friends.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her son, David A. Sampson on June 16, 2018.
Family will receive friends on Saturday, October 9, 2021 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Straub, Catalano & Halvey Funeral Home, 55 East Main Street, Wappingers Falls, NY 12590.
A funeral service will take place after visitation at 1 p.m. at the funeral home; Mother Leigh Hall will officiate. Interment will follow in Wappingers Rural Cemetery, West Main Street in Wappingers Falls. Space will be limited and social distancing encouraged for funeral home services.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Norma’s name to St. Nicholas-on-the-Hudson Church, 37 Point Street, New Hamburg, NY 12590.
