Obituary of Mildred R. Singler

Mildred R. Singler, a resident of Poughkeepsie, entered into rest Saturday, October 30, 2021 at The Eleanor Nursing Care Center in Hyde Park. She was 95.

Daughter of the late Anthony and Mildred Mohr Hilbring, she was born February 20, 1926 in the Bronx. She graduated from James Monroe High School and took night courses in English and Accounting at NYU. Mildred starting working at Merrill Lynch in 1943 and met her future husband, John Singler while working there. They were married on August 6, 1947 at the Church of the Transfiguration (The Little Church Around The Corner). Her husband preceded her in death in 1974.

Mildred went on to work as a research assistant with Wood, Struthers and Winthrop, a private banking firm, from 1956 until her retirement in 1977. Mildred became an Associate of the Community of St. Mary in 1965 and is still currently an associate member. She moved to St. Mary’s Convent in Peekskill in 1978 where she supervised the altar bread department and St. Gabriel’s Retreat House.  She moved in with her son, John, in Poughkeepsie in 2002.

Mildred loved opera, travel and all manner of needle work. She enjoyed working on the embroidery of antique vestments at St. Mary’s Convent and was a member of the Skyllkill Chapter of the Embroiders Guild of America.

She is survived by her son, John and his wife, Deborah; as well as her grandchildren, Lisa, Stacy and David. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her step daughter, Linda.

Family and friends will gather for a memorial service at 11 a.m. on Friday, November 5, 2021 at Zion Episcopal Church, 12 Satterlee Place in Wappingers Falls.
