Joan Blacklock, age 88, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 6, 2022 in Poughkeepsie, NY after a long battle with Lewy body dementia. Joni was born on August 20, 1933 in Syracuse, NY to Frank and Hazel (Rockwood) Yarwood. 

Joni had a passion to serve others, whether it was organizing fantastic fish suppers at St. Paul’s  in Schenectady or welcoming kids to the Rosamond Gifford Zoo in Syracuse. She made friends in all the New York places she called home - Wappingers Falls, Star Lake, Albany, Schenectady, Philadelphia, Syracuse, and Poughkeepsie. She was an extremely hard worker and her proudest accomplishment was earning her Associates’ degree from the Onondaga Community College in her 50s. Though Joni’s health was failing for years, few people knew the extent to which she struggled. Her joy for life and caring spirit never left. Joni was a happy, forgiving soul with a heart of gold and she always retained her loving attitude. 

Joan is survived by her beloved children Douglas (Patty) Blacklock, Kim Adair Blacklock, William Francis Blacklock, and Barbara (Clark) Laird; her dear grandchildren Douglas Aaron Blacklock, Matai Francis Blacklock, Mackenzie Apele Laird, and Cameron Isobel Laird.  She is predeceased by her ex-husband Charles Blacklock; her siblings, Pete Yarwood, Sue Pelkey, and Ed Yarwood. 

Family will receive their friends on Saturday, March 19, 2022 from 2 to 4:30 p.m. at Straub, Catalano & Halvey Funeral Home, 55 E. Main Street, Wappingers Falls, NY 12590. A memorial service will follow visitation at 4:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 4, 2022 at 10 a.m. at St. Mark the Evangelist Episcopal Church, 1612 W. Genesee Street in Syracuse.
