Obituary of Virginia F. Hubner

Virginia Frances (Langton) Hubner, affectionately known as Ginny, passed away

peacefully on October 20, 2024 at the age of 92 after a 12-year journey with cancer. Over 9 decades of accomplishments and memories reflect a life well-lived.  Ginny’s life can best be encapsulated by the words: Family, Friends, Community/Commitment and Fun. In her 92-years she experienced an abundance of each.

Family - Ginny spent her early years in Queens, NY with her parents William and Teresa Langton, sisters Eleanor and Mary, and grandparents. Following World War II she met her husband (Alexander W. Hubner, Jr.) and they were married on July 27, 1952 and maintained a loving and supportive relationship of 72 years. They built a home in Wappingers Falls in 1955 and she lived there until her death. Together they raised four children - Kurt, Steven, Linda, and Andrew and eventually welcomed Steven’s spouse (Jana), Andrew’s spouse (Gwen), and Linda’s spouse (Doug). While raising a family of four, she also worked part-time as a library aid for the Wappingers Central School District and helped to care for several elderly relatives as they transitioned to nursing homes and hospitals. Ginny created a warm and welcoming family home which was the gathering place for family and friends.

Friends - Ginny was active in many organizations over the years. She cherished

her friendships, developing them at each stage of her life. Her association with

organizations such as Boys Scouts, Girls Scouts (all children were scouts), Knights of Columbus, Odd Fellows, Bowling Leagues, Crochet Club, Polish Club, and Evans Elementary School Retirees Club, encompassed all aspects of life, and each was special to her. From phone call chats to family outings, to entertaining, to adventures near and far, to helping in times of sadness and difficulty, Ginny was up for it all. She was known not just for enjoying her friendships but for being a good friend as well. Ginny knew that friendships take work to maintain and she was willing to put in the effort, thus got to reap the rewards.

Community/Commitment- Ginny lived a life dedicated to formal and informal

volunteer service. Her boundless energy and life-long commitment to contribute

reflected her beliefs. As a young mother she was a volunteer to Boy and Girl

Scouts of America. She volunteered as a National Park Service guide for 34-years

at the homes of Franklin D. Roosevelt and Eleanor Roosevelt. A volunteer

with Meals On Wheels of Wappingers Falls for 20 years she helped seniors live

independently with dignity for as long as possible. Ginny was a faithful member of Saint Mary, Mother of the Church in Fishkill and a volunteer lay minister at the Castle Point Veterans Faith Chapel. Since Ginny’s husband is a living WWII veteran of 99 years, this service was especially relevant and personal to her. Additionally, she held several volunteer positions within her husband’s WWII 94th Infantry Division reunion organization. Ginny informally crocheted infant blankets for a local hospital and shawls for adults undergoing chemotherapy treatment. Her 92 years showed a continuous thread of service and dedication that is central to the spirit of our nation. She embodied the idea that people can live and age with dignity, purpose, and quality of life. It is courageous that Ginny maintained her multi-faceted volunteer service even while being treated for cancer since her early 80’s. She was an inspiration to friends and her children found it amazing that she fulfilled these commitments while still running an independent household and supporting her 99-year-old husband.

Fun - Ginny and her husband had many adventures as a couple over the years, as

well as with their friends and family. Summer vacations on Long Island, family

clam bakes, living 2 years in Scotland and England for her husband’s work, touring

the US and Europe, vacationing and visiting with their married children, annual

WWII 94th reunions, gourmet club, museums, theater performances, and

numerous activities. Life is made of moments and memories and the richness of life experiences. Ginny had much to celebrate and be proud of. All the people she made smile and all the love given and received had a big impact on so many people. Up until the end, Ginny maintained her kindness, compassion, love of family and friends, and was grateful to have lived a long life full of wonderful experiences as well as the richness of a loving family, good friends and compassionate care givers at the end. She truly embodied the adage of a life well lived.

Family and friends will gather on Thursday, October 24, 2024 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at Straub, Catalano & Halvey Funeral Home, 55 East Main Street in Wappingers Falls. A funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. at the funeral home.
