Obituary of Mary H. Feron
Mary (Hill) Feron, of Poughkeepsie, died on October 28, 2024 after a fall at home two days prior. Mary was the wife of the late Stephen J. Feron, who predeceased her in 2007.
Born in Rhinebeck, NY on July 29, 1938, Mary was the daughter of the late Raymond & Marion (Just) Hill. She was educated in Hyde Park graduating from FDR High School, and then from Vassar College.
Mary started her career in teaching as an elementary teacher in the Spackenkill School District. While she loved teaching younger children, after taking time away from work to raise her own children, Mary returned to teaching, this time as a math teacher. She taught at both Roy C. Ketcham and John Jay High Schools. After retiring from classroom teaching, Mary was a popular home tutor, a role she cherished.
Those who knew Mary enjoyed her warm spirit and friendly smile. Nothing pleased her more than visiting with friends, including the houseful of friends her sons would often host. Mary loved all animals, but most of all she loved the companionship of cats, of which she often had multiple. Cooking was another hobby, and her baking skills, most especially her pies, were well-known and sought-after. She also loved coffee, wine, reading the morning paper, crossword puzzles, the Jersey Shore, and flowers. Mary was a long-suffering Mets and Jets fan, but never gave up and watched every game.
Most of all, Mary loved raising her two sons, Stephen and Timothy. Attending every game, every college family weekend, every celebration, big or small, Mary couldn't get enough of seeing her boys grow-up and start their own families. And as her grandchildren entered into sports & activities, she was equally interested in their endeavors and receiving updates from them. She loved them and they loved their Gammy.
Mary had a wide network of friends, many of whom were also neighbors. Shared activities were countless, from Friday night dinners to casual conversations while she walked the neighborhood. The family wishes to thank all of you for your meaningful kinship, support, and help to Mary over all the years.
Mary is survived by her sons, Stephen and his wife Jill of Hamilton, MA, and Timothy and his wife Jennifer of Poughkeepsie, NY; and grandchildren Benjamin, Andrew, Christopher, and Katie. She is also survived by her sister, Katherine Doolittle and her husband John, and several nieces and nephews.
Family will receive their friends on Monday, November 4, 2024 from 3 to 6 p.m. at Straub, Catalano & Halvey Funeral Home, 55 E. Main Street, Wappingers Falls, NY 12590.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Mary's memory may be made to the Dutchess County SPCA, 636 Violet Avenue, Hyde Park, NY, 12538.
