Obituary of Nicholas J. Contelmo
Nicholas Contelmo, owner of Contelmo´s Sand and Gravel, Wappingers Falls passed away on December 30, 2024. One month before his 96th birthday on January 30th. He was the second child of Aloysius Contelmo and Carmela Stellavato Contelmo. He was predeceased by his siblings Rose Marie Tarquini and Aloysius Contelmo.
Nick graduated from St. Mary´s School, and the Wappingers Central School. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1950 to 1952. He worked for his father in the family business Contelmo´s Sand and Gravel which originated in the 1900 by his Grandfather, Nicolo Contelmo. Nick was very proud that this business was honored in 2009 at the Picnic in the Park Parade as the oldest operating business in The Village of Wappingers Falls.
In 1955, Nick married Christina Visentin. Together they ran the business and raised a fine family; James and his wife Donna, their children Jeff and Alicia; Jeffrey and his wife Sharon, their daughter Celia; Maryann and her husband Michael Pilon, their children Lea and Cole.
Nick set a fine example of how to put in a hard day's work without complaining, how to keep going without quitting, and how to take life as it comes and make everyday count.
He will be remembered by all who visited him in his garage where he was always ready with a cup of coffee, a loan of a tool, or advice on a repair. He was loved and respected by all, a beloved husband, father, and grandfather. He will be greatly missed.
¨I´ve worked since I was 13 years old but never thought of it as work - I loved my job.¨ - Nicholas Contelmo
