Obituary of George F. Capasso

George F. Capasso, a long time resident of Wappingers Falls, NY, entered into rest on Monday, August 29, 2016, in Poughkeepsie, NY. He was 90. George was born on July 3, 1926, in Hartford, CT. He was the son of Italian immigrants, the late Anthony and Christine Ferla Capasso. George was a loving and devoted father. He is survived by his wife, Katherine Capasso of Wappingers Falls, NY; his daughters Nettie Capasso of New York City, and Christina Capasso of Beacon, NY; Nettie's fiance, Richard Abanes, and Christina's boyfriend, Jeremy Wallace; George's sisters, Jean Capasso-DeNovellis, Maryanne McCusker and her husband Gilbert, of Hartford, CT, Laureen Latimer and her husband Larry, and Lila Grimalia of California; his aunt Ola Ferla of Farmington, CT and cousins Susan and Paul Ferla; as well as nieces and nephews, Marc, Tina, Craig, Brian, Gerald, Karen, Kelly, Kami, Richard, Debbie, Laurel, and Sherry. George is additionally survived by several cousins, grand nieces, and grand nephews. He is predeceased by his younger brothers Richard and Francis Capasso, his beloved uncle Salvatore "Sal" Ferla, and brother-in-law, Anthony "Tony" DeNovellis, formerly of Hartford, CT. George proudly served his country in the United States Air Force and was stationed in Japan at the end of World War II. After his honorable discharge from the service, George earned a B.S. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Connecticut in 1951. He then worked for 34 years as an electrical engineer at IBM Poughkeepsie, East Fishkill, and Kingston. George was excited to be on the cutting edge of early computer technology advancements throughout the 1960s and 1970s. His many projects included the creation of IBM's Meridian processor (3033), which was introduced to the world in 1976. George retired from IBM in 1990. George married Katherine Marie Szymanski of Kingston, NY in September of 1968. He enjoyed spending time with his family, and had numerous hobbies including reading, gardening, biking, outdoor activities, traveling, and tennis. George participated in community activities, and was a member of the IBM Retirees' club for many years. He was also an avid photographer, and was involved in local photography organizations, including the Mid-Hudson Photography Club. George was rarely without his camera equipment, and took great pride in photographing and archiving family events throughout the years. He created a vast collection of photos which continues to bring much joy and comfort to his family. George was known for his positive outlook, love for life, and youthful energy. He will be greatly missed by his family and all who knew him. The Capasso family will receive visitors on Friday, September 2, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Straub, Catalano & Halvey Funeral Home, 55 East Main Street, in Wappingers Falls, NY. A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 3, at St. Mary's Church, 11 Clinton Street, in Wappingers Falls, NY. An additional visitation will be held on Monday, September 5, from 5 to 8 p.m. at D'Esopo Funeral Chapel, 277 Folly Brook Blvd., Wethersfield, CT.
