Obituary of Joan A. Buckes

Joan A. Buckes, a resident of Poughkeepsie, entered into rest Sunday, September 25, 2016 at Lutheran Care Center in Poughkeepsie. She was 83. Daughter of the late Peter and Edith Oatis Shelley, she was born December 3, 1932 in Yonkers. On July 20, 1952 she married Charles W. Buckes, Jr. in Scarsdale. Mr. Buckes preceded her in death on December 9, 1999. Prior to her retirement, Joan worked as a licensed practical nurse at the Pleasantville Cottage School and the Astor Home. Joan was involved with horses from when she was much younger until she was no longer able to take care of them. She treasured time spent with them. She also loved her family and especially her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Joan will be remembered as a loving caregiver both as a trait and by trade. Children both at home and at work were drawn to her by her compassion. Survivors include her children, Deborah Shedden of Salt Point, Sheryl Kluge of Charlotte, North Carolina, Charles Buckes of Stormville, and Carolyn Wagner-Stoutenburg and her husband, Michael of Kingston; her grandchildren, James Shedden, Keri Shedden, Mark Kluge, Brittany Wagner, Ryan Kluge, and Devin Wagner; her great-grandchildren, Dani, Rylee, Logan and Stephen; as well as several nieces and nephews. Family will receive friends on Wednesday, September 28, 2016 from 5 to 9 p.m. at Straub, Catalano & Halvey Funeral Home, 55 East Main Street in Wappingers Falls. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, September 29 at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, North Broadway in Sleepy Hollow. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Joan's name to the Children's Foundation of Astor, 6339 Mill Street, Rhinebeck, NY 12572.
