Obituary of Franz Breckwoldt

Franz "Opa" Breckwoldt, a resident of Poughkeepsie, entered into rest surrounded by his wife, children and grandchildren on Sunday, October 9, 2016 at his home. He was 89. Son of the late Theodore and Lissetta Breckwoldt, he was born September 5, 1927 in Hamburg, Germany. He married the former Hildegard Brehmer on October 6, 1951 in Hanover, Germany. Mrs. Breckwoldt survives at home in Poughkeepsie. After their marriage they moved to the United States and owned and operated Frank's Deli in the Bronx until their retirement. Most importantly, he will be remembered as devoted husband and a loving father and grandfather. Opa treasured time spent with his grandchildren. In addition to his family, he was known and loved as "Opa" by many friends and extended family. In addition to his wife of sixty-five years, he is survived by his children, Pete Breckwoldt and his wife, Vicki of Florida and Rita Wilson and her husband, Larry of Poughkeepsie; his brother, Jochen Breckwoldt of Hamburg, Germany; his grandchildren, Michael Breckwoldt, Tommy Breckwoldt, Lauren Donohue, Stephanie Wilson, Jennifer Loper, Jaclyn Breckwoldt, Jessica Breckwoldt, and Monika Wilson; many great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews in Germany. Family will receive friends on Wednesday, October 12, 2016 from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at Straub, Catalano & Halvey Funeral Home, 55 East Main Street, Wappingers Falls, NY 12590. A memorial service will be held at 6:30 p.m. during the visitation at the funeral home.
