I am saddened to hear that my dear friend and mentor at the MTA has passed away. Erwin was a true friend and he didn't have a selfish bone in his body. He was jolly and helpful to all who worked with him. As a professional engineer, he was confident and always willing to share information with everyone; he was not afraid of giving ideas or proposing new ideas and a real TEAM player.
I will miss him and the days at O'Keeffe's where we had discussions about life, purpose, meaning and contributions. Tomorrow I will celebrate St. Patrick's Day, but more importantly I will toast to the remembrance of Erwin Schafer.
We have lost a decent human being, but God has gotten one of his angels.

My condolences to your family on the loss of Erwin. He was my 1st boss at NYC Transit and also hired me there. I have very fond memories of him in my early years at Transit. He taught me many things as an engineer and a friend. When I retired 4 years ago I know he could not make the retirement, but I did speak to him. Thank you for sharing him with me for that time. He will be missed.
