Obituary of Jean Hess
Jean Hess, 97, a lifelong resident of New Hamburg, died on January 20, 2018 in Easton, Pennsylvania.
Jean was born in New Hamburg on October 23, 1920 to Frank Nodine and Lilla Pardee Nodine. She was baptized as an infant and later married to Ernest Hess on April 5, 1942 in Zion Chapel in New Hamburg (now St. Nicholas on the Hudson). Mr. Hess died on October 29, 2009. They are survived by three children, Karen Hess Kaiser (Kenneth), Martha Hess Pascoe (James Robert), and Peter William Hess II (Dona); four grandchildren, Matthew Sinsabaugh (Mary), Caroline Moore (Joseph), Zachary Hess and Tinsley Hess; five great-grandchildren, Alan, Amanda, Ryan, Erin and Samantha; and two great-great-grandchildren, Liam and Amelia.
Although primarily a homemaker, Jean worked for the Dutchess County Board of Elections, on registration and election days, and volunteered at the Well Baby Clinic. She was active in the St. Nicholas congregation as an altar guild member, lay reader, chalice bearer, and contributed many cakes, aprons, mittens and afghans for their fairs and food sales her entire adult life. She will be remembered by her friends and neighbors in New Hamburg as she sat on her front porch in the summer chatting and waving to everyone who passed on Reed Road. She also spent many hours feeding "her" deer in the backyard, much to the consternation of Ernie and the local conservation officers who warned her that she could be fined. That didn't stop Mom. She loved the home that she and Ernie built and her Hudson River.
Family will receive friends on Saturday, April 28, 2018 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at St. Nicholas on the Hudson, 37 Point Street in New Hamburg. A Memorial Service will follow at 11:30 a.m. with The Rev. Leigh Hall, Rector officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Jean's name may be made to St. Nicholas on the Hudson.
The family would like to thank Dr. Edward Schneider and staff for their many years of care to both Jean and Ernie; the staff of Chandler Assisted Living, Wind Gap, PA and Abington Manor Dementia Care Facility in Easton, PA. Their care and dedication was amazing and appreciated.
