Sokoya, I said, looking through
the net of wrinkles into
wise black pools of her eyes
What do you say in Athabaskan
when you leave each other?
What is the word for goodbye?
A shade of feeling rippled
the wind-tanned skin.
Ah, nothing, she said, watching the river flash.
She looked at me close.
We just say, Tlaa. That means,
See you.
We never leave each other.
When does your mouth say goodbye to your heart?
She touched me light
as a bluebell.
You forget when you leave us; you're so small then.
We don't use that word.
We always think you're coming back,
but if you don't, we'll see you someplace else.
You understand.
There is no word for goodbye.
Mary Tallmountain
This poem was part of an English class I took way back when. Tlaa, Aunt Gloria.

Loving and Giving. the best words to describe my sister Gloria. She was also one of life's best teachers. The ability to instruct others in many avenues means she touched the future. She authored cook books for many churches and charities, that even the most inept person could produce a homecooked meal with appetizers and desserts. Her enthusiasm and spirituality continue to have ripple effects to this day. As a devotee to Saint Pio (then Padre Pio), Gloria organized pilgrimages to the then-new center in Barto, PA. To this day, neighbors and friends, tell me of personal triumphs and miracles brought about due to the relics and prayer cards Gloria gave them.
Birthdays, anniversaries and other special occasions.....Gloria knew them all. And sent cards. She knew the meaning of "They'll never forget you remembered" decades before Hallmark.
There's so much to tell about my sister.
Most important is that I feel her love everyday...
Take care and God Bless.

I was deeply saddened by learning of Gloria's passing into the Gates of Heaven - If there existed a true and honest Saint, here on Earth, it was Gloria who occupied those Saintly shoes. It is also befitting to mention, at this time, of the perseverence Gloria had, both in heart and soul, not just through the past nine months, in going back and forth between Hospital and her beloved Family - but also, in the perseverence of
being able to effectively handle the significant "ill" and "grief" that some individuals have instilled upon Gloria in the past few years, and for no apparent nor valid reason. Gloria, you will be missed, and I want to thank you now, as I always have in the past, for your truthful insight and direction which you have provided me. My deepest sympathy to Hank, for the many years of loving care he has provided to Gloria - and his heartful patience, as well as Gloria's children - both Military who have been deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan - as well as non-Military, who were always there for their "Mom". May she rest in the peace and love of Jesus. Amen.

Gloria was a wonderful friend, who i will dearly miss. She was my sister in the Third Order. I will always cherish the beautiful woven yellow ribbon for the troops that she made for me last year. There are many kind people in the world, but every now and then you meet someone who shines above. Gloria was one of those people to me. She was one of the kindest woman i ever met. I will miss her dearly, but take comfort in knowing that she now sees the face of God. I will never forget my loving friend.

Aside from the fact that I never actually met Gloria, I had the opportunity to speak with her on the phone, many, many times. Rest assured that she has found her place in Heaven, as she was, no doubt, a true walking Saint. My deepest sympathy to Hank, and the entire Trofinoff family. May she rest in Peace.
