Obituary of Gertrude E. Burns

Gertrude E. Burns Gertrude E. Burns of the Town of Poughkeepsie entered into rest Wednesday, September 7, 2005 at St. Francis Hospital in Poughkeepsie. She was 60. Daughter of the late Aidan and Theresa Kirwan Kennedy, she was born on December 21, 1944 in Manhattan. Gertrude worked as a social worker for many years for the Ossining Correctional Facility, Ossining, New York. She was also a long time parishioner of St. Mary's Church in Wappingers Falls. She enjoyed many things in life including quilting and making Irish soda bread. Gertrude was a generous and hospitable spirit, opening her home to those in need. She also had a great love for animals, especially cats. Survivors include her daughter, Kathleen Burns of Hurley; brothers, Hugh Kirwan and his wife, Alice of New Jersey and Edward Kirwan and his wife, Heidi of Manhattan; and several nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by two sons, Owen Carey who passed in 1986 and Thor Carey who passed in April of this year, and her sister Margaret Mahon. Family will receive their friends on Thursday, September 8 from 6-9 p.m. at Straub Funeral Home, 55 East Main Street, Wappingers Falls, NY 12590. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Friday, September 9 at 1 p.m. at St. Mary's Church in Wappingers Falls. Interment will follow in Wappingers Rural Cemetery, Wappingers Falls. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Gertrude's name to the American Diabetes Association, PO Box 2680, North Canton, OH 44720 or the ASPCA, 636 Violet Avenue Hyde Park, NY 12538.
