Obituary of Gilbert L. Hilderbrand

Gilbert L. Hilderbrand Gilbert L. Hilderbrand, a lifelong resident of Wappingers Falls, entered into rest Sunday, October 22, 2006 at his residence. He was 82. The second child of Dimen and Helen Stuart Hilderbrand, he was born on March 22, 1924 in Danbury, Connecticut. Mr. Hilderbrand attended Drake's School in Wappingers Falls and graduated from Wappingers High School, Class of 1942. He served his country in the United States Army during World War II and then went on to work for many years at local supermarket chains until his retirement. Gil was an avid writer of poetry and won several awards for his work. His greatest pleasures were visits by his family and friends and the companionship of his many pet dogs. He spent his entire life living with and caring for his beloved mother, Helen Stuart Hilderbrand; she precedes him in death, passing in 1985. Survivors include his sister, Doris "Daud" Halpin and her husband, James; his brother Raymond "Bub" Hilderbrand; five nieces; ten nephews; and several great and great-great nieces and nephews, and cousins. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his sisters, Ada Booth, Jean Cornell and Violet "Sid" Kane. Family will receive their friends on Wednesday, October 25, 2006 from 4-8 pm at Straub Funeral Home, 55 East Main Street, Wappingers Falls, NY 12590. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, October 26 at 10 a.m. at the Zion Episcopal Church in Wappingers Falls with Rev. Horace Choate presiding. Interment will follow in the family plot in Wappingers Rural Cemetery, Wappingers Falls. Memorial donations may be made in Gil's name to the American Cancer Society, 45 Reade Place, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601.
