Obituary of Eileen Weit

Eileen Weit Beloved mother of five, grandmother of 12 and great-grandmother of three, Eileen Monaghan Weit died August 21, 2007 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie, surrounded by her family. A native of Astoria, Queens, she married Arthur T. Weit of Brooklyn in 1945. They soon relocated to the Village of Wappingers Falls, where she raised her children, was an active volunteer in the community and was a daily communicant of St. Mary's Church. A devoted member of St. Mary's parish, she served in many different capacities in her lifetime as a charter member of the St. Mary's Chapter of the Catholic Daughters of America where she was Grand Regent, a member of the Ladies' Ancient Order of Hibernians, a longtime principal of the Religious Education program and a volunteer business office accountant. With her husband, Arthur, she was a co-chairperson of the Wappingers Falls "Picnic in the Park" for 10 years. She remained an active member in her church and community for the 15 years after Arthur passed in October of 1992. Survivors include her five children and their spouses, Brian and Nola Weit of Red Hook, Eileen and Louis J. Fratto, Jr. of Poughkeepsie, Kathleen and James Davis of Poughkeepsie, Kevin and Jennifer Weit of Roswell, GA, and Maureen and John Helmbold of Kingston; her sister, Grace Monaghan of Arlington, VA; her cousins, Sr. Leo Frances Monaghan and Francis Monaghan, both of Long Island and Charles Giblin of Wurtsboro; 12 proud grandchildren, Monica, Mark, Amy and Terry, Timmy and Johanna, Brendan, Kelli, Bradley, Ryan, Michael, Robbie, Danielle and Andrew; and three great-grandchildren, Joseph, Anthony and Dylan.. In addition to her husband, she is predeceased by her brother, James. Family will receive their friends on Thursday, August 23 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Straub, Catalano & Halvey Funeral Home, 55 E. Main St., Wappingers Falls, NY 12590. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Friday, August 24 at 12 noon at St. Mary's Church, Clinton Street in Wappingers Falls. Interment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Wappingers Falls. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Eileen's name to St. Mary's Parish, 11 Clinton Street, Wappingers Falls, NY 12590.
