Obituary of Richard L. Taylor

Richard L. Taylor Richard L. Taylor of Poughkeepsie died Sunday, December 9th at home from complications of Parkinson's disease. Mr. Taylor was born in Columbus, Ohio on December 18, 1931. He was the son of Leland and Sarah Robbins Taylor. On September 24, 1955 he married Sally Edwards in Boston. Mr. Taylor was a member of the Class of 1953 at MIT. After completing his Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering, he served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army from 1955 to 1957, stationed in Arlington, Virginia. Following his service, he joined IBM and enjoyed a distinguished career until his retirement. A long time Dutchess County resident, Mr. Taylor was a volunteer at Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library in Hyde Park and at the Grinnell Library in Wappingers Falls, where for many years he taught computer classes. Along with his wife, he was a member of the Center for Lifetime Studies and enjoyed taking classes, especially in Science and Music. His love for music led him to play numerous instruments including banjo, clarinet, guitar, recorder and more. From his membership in the MIT Outing Club during college and through the years, he enjoyed many outdoor pastimes, especially bicycling. As a member and officer of the Mid-Hudson Bicycle Club, he devoted countless hours not only to riding but leading and planning bicycle expeditions. Survivors include his wife Sally of Poughkeepsie, three daughters; Janet Gangemi and her husband, Vincent of Pine Beach, NJ, Penelope Ruekberg and her husband, Brad of Richardson, TX and Celia Taylor and her husband, Jeff Miller of Denver, CO; and three grandchildren, Zachary and Samuel Gangemi, and Isabella Ruekberg. There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held at 3pm on Friday, December 28th at Christ Episcopal Church, Carroll Street, Poughkeepsie. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Grinnell Library, 2642 E. Main St., Wappingers Falls, NY 12590.
