Obituary of John C. Luber

John C. Luber John C. Luber, 75, of Poughkeepsie, closed the final chapter of a story rich with love, family and quiet success at his home on Tuesday, May 6, 2008. Son of the late John C. and Elizabeth Voekl Luber, Sr. he was born at home in the Bronx on November 19, 1932. John is a 1950 graduate of Regis High School, in Manhattan. He graduated from Manhattan College in 1954 with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering. John went on to work for General Electric and it was while working there that he graduated from Yale University with a M.S. in Industrial Management. Later in life he also graduated from Iona College with a B.S. in Family Counseling. John is survived by his wife of eight years, Bernadette Barrett Luber and her three children, Christen Barrett; Bernadette Brooks and her husband, Robert; and Gregory Barrett and his wife, Margaret. He also leaves his children from his wife, Patricia Dempsey Luber who preceded him in death in 1983; John C. Luber, III and his wife, Eileen; Bruce Luber and his wife, Carol; Ann Dombroski and her husband, Tom; Mary Pat Luber Green and her husband, George; and Peter Luber and his wife, Lisa. He also leaves six children whom chose to call him father during and beyond his marriage to their mother, Malvina Mattiello Luber who preceded him in death in 1994; Larry Mattiello; Arthur Mattiello and his wife, Linda; Rosemary Mancino and her husband, Angelo; Richard Mattiello and his wife, Debbie; Vivian LaColla and her husband, Rob; and Malvina Ricci and her husband, Remo. His family also includes thirty-one grandchildren, Bryanne, Donovan, McKenna, Danielle, Kevin, Mathew, Teresa, who preceded him in death in 1993, Jennifer, Jonathan, Melissa, Katie, John, IV, Nicole, Nicholas, Kenny, T.J., David, Robbie, Taryn, Matthew, Michael, Alicia, Nicholas, Michael, Joey, Danny, Dominic, Noelle, Remo, Jaclyn and Lauren. He also leaves two sisters, Elizabeth Maglione and her husband, John, Joan Luber and Katherine English, his cousin and several nieces and nephews. Though a family of this size is legacy enough, John also touched the lives of many couples during his years as a family counselor. He practiced Family Counseling after retiring from his management position at IBM's manufacturing division and helped establish their school in Thornwood, Westchester. Previously, John and his wife, Pat, were instrumental in spreading the Marriage Encounter movement in the 1970's as well as helping establish Engaged Encounter in Dutchess County. Both groups have helped many happy couples find true depth in their relationships. His strong belief in the sanctity of marriage provided a living example to couples seeking to understand and strengthen their relationships. John was a communicant at St. Mary's Church, Wappingers Falls where he served as a lector and was active in the RCIA program. In addition, he was a member of the Cursillo Community and also served on the Residents Encounter Christ prison weekends. Though the list of accomplishments could continue, John will be remembered fondly and forever as a man of great faith, love, and real compassion. He will be missed, but his example and love will persevere. Family will receive their friends on Thursday, May 8, 2008 from2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Straub, Catalano & Halvey Funeral Home, 55 E. Main Street, Wappingers Falls, NY 12590 . A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 am on Friday, May 9, 2008 at St. Mary's Church, Clinton Street, Wappingers Falls. Interment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Wappingers Falls. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in John's name to either, Good Counsel Homes, Inc., 38 North Clinton Street, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601 or Hudson River Housing Wind Chill Fund, for their Overnight Homeless Shelter, 313 Mill Street, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601.
