Donald P. McManus, Sr.
Donald P. McManus, Sr. of Poughkeepsie entered into rest Tuesday, May 20, 2008 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center, surrounded by his family. He was 80.
Son of the late Patrick and Mary Grimes McManus, he was born on March 23, 1928 in St. Albans, Long Island. He married the love of his life, Gertrude DeMatteo on July 2, 1955 in Poughkeepsie; Mrs. McManus survives at home.
Mr. McManus proudly served his country in the United States Navy during World War II. He went on to work for New York Telephone as a Right of Way agent; he remained there for 37 years until his retirement. Donald also belonged to many local organizations such as the Knights of Columbus, Elks BPOE and VFW, all of Wappingers Falls, and the Clove Mountain Archers. In his spare time he loved to hunt and golf. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family; they never left his side, staying with him right until the end.
In addition to his wife, Gertrude, he is survived by his son, Donald P. McManus, Jr. of Poughkeepsie; daughters, Colleen McManus-Sarubbi and her husband, Joseph Sarubbi of East Greenbush, and Kathleen A. Ortolano and her husband, John of Lagrangeville; brothers, Bernard McManus and his wife, Janet of Cape Cod, and Gerard McManus and his wife, Angela of Long Island; a sister, Margaret Ross of Long Island; grandchildren, J.T., Alisha, Nicole and Brett Sarubbi, and John, Ryan and Kaitlin Ortolano; and several nieces and nephews.
Donald is predeceased by his sister, Elizabeth Gallagher.
Family will receive their friends on Friday, May 23, 2008 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Straub, Catalano & Halvey Funeral Home, 55 E. Main Street, Wappingers Falls, NY 12590.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Saturday, May 24 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, Clinton Street in Wappingers Falls. Entombment will follow in Poughkeepsie Rural Community Mausoleum, Poughkeepsie.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Donald's name to the American Heart Association, Heart Gifts Processing Center, PO Box 3049, Syracuse, NY 13220.
