Obituary of Richard Taran

Richard Taran Richard Taran of the Town of Poughkeepsie entered into rest suddenly on Thursday, September 11, 2008. He was 70. Son of the late Peter and Catherine, he was born on June 24, 1938 in New York City. He married the love of his life, Joan McAvey on January 24, 1959 in New York City; Mrs. Taran survives at home in Poughkeepsie. Mr. Taran proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from 1955 to1959. After his service, he attended Dutchess Community College. In 1962 he began his long career with IBM. He retired as a project manager in semiconductor equipment and engineering operations on July 31, 1992. While there, he became a member of the IBM Quarter Century Club. Richard was a parishioner of St. Mary's Church in Wappingers Falls and also belonged to many organizations; he was a member of Marriage Encounter for 35 years and a member of the East Hook Rod and Gun Club. His favorite place was the Great Sacandaga Lake where he loved to spend time with his friends and family. Richard loved hunting, fishing, golfing, reading and traveling; he will be greatly missed by all. In addition to his wife, Joan, he is survived by his children, Joanne M. Taran and her significant other, James McGuire of Fishkill, Richard P. Taran and his wife, Debra of Columbia, SC, Susan L. Schmitt and her husband, Fred of Wappingers Falls, Ellen E. Serencsics and her husband, Joseph of Poughkeepsie, and Bruce E. Taran and his companion, Ellen Wolfinger of Wappingers Falls; his brother, Fr. Peter Taran, S.A. of Graymoor; his sister, Catherine Engert and her husband, Richard; sister-in-law, Audrey Taran; beloved Poppy to Mason Schmitt, Joey and Katie Serencsics, and Harley Taran; several nieces and nephews; and his dog, Ginger. He was predeceased by his brother, Kenneth Taran on July 14, 2008. Family will receive their friends on Sunday, September 14, 2008 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Straub, Catalano & Halvey Funeral Home, 55 East Main Street, Wappingers Falls, NY 12590. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Monday, September 15 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, Clinton Street in Wappingers Falls. Entombment will follow in the Poughkeepsie Rural Community Mausoleum, Poughkeepsie. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Richard's name to the American Heart Association, 301 Manchester Road # 105, Poughkeepsie, NY 12603.
