Obituary of Marjorie Vandewater Shay

Straub, Catalano & Halvey Funeral Home 55 East Main Street Wappingers Falls, New York (845)297-2610 Obituary Marjorie Vandewater Shay Marjorie Vandewater Shay of Poughkeepsie, NY, died on December 28, 2009. She was 91. Daughter of the late Frank J. and Beulah Betts Vandewater, she was born in Bergenfield, NJ, on March 4, 1918. She was a graduate of Poughkeepsie High School and Edgewood Park College in Briarcliff Manor. Upon graduating from college, she was employed in the Home Service Department of Central Hudson Gas & Electric. She married Frank W. Shay on February 14, 1941. They were together for 57 years, until his death on October 28, 1998. She lived in Newburgh for 42 years, where she served as president of the Board of Managers of the Newburgh Day Nursery, and was a member of St. Luke's Hospital Auxiliary, the American Contract Bridge League and the Mid-Hudson Bridge Club. She was also a member of the United Methodist Church of Wappingers Falls. Survivors include a son, Don Shay, and his wife, Estelle Shay, of Riverside, CA; a daughter, Millie DeNitto, and her husband, Jim DeNitto, of Poughkeepsie; a grandson, Gregg Shay, and his wife, Rachael Shay, of Carlsbad, CA; two granddaughters, Laura and Amy DeNitto, of Poughkeepsie; a great-grandson, Ethan Shay, of Carlsbad, CA; and a niece, Nancy Langworthy, of Ormond Beach, FL. She was predeceased by a brother, Donald B. Vandewater. Visitation will begin at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, January 3, 2010 at Straub, Catalano & Halvey Funeral Home, 55 East Main St., Wappingers, NY 12590, with services following at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Hospice, 374 Violet Ave., Poughkeepsie, NY 12601.
