Obituary of Dorothy D. Cumming

Dorothy D. Cumming Dorothy D. Cumming, a resident of the Town of Poughkeepsie, entered into rest Wednesday, January 20, 2010 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center, Poughkeepsie. She was 87. Daughter of the late Carl August and Leona Josephine Overfield Diener, she was born July 21, 1922 in Plattekill, New York. On September 21, 1947 in Wappingers Falls she married John W. Cumming. Mr. Cumming preceded her in death on October 12, 1966. Dorothy attended New Paltz Teachers College and during World War II, she went to work for Texaco Research Laboratories in Glenham. After taking time to raise her children, she went back to work for Texaco and retired in July 1992. She was a member of Poughkeepsie United Methodist Church. Dorothy was a voracious reader, enjoyed traveling and hiking. Most importantly she was a devoted mother and grandmother. She was her daughter's best friend. She is survived by her son, John W. Cumming, Jr. of Poughkeepsie; her daughter, Carol L. Behrends of San Diego, California; her grandson, Beau Behrends of San Diego, California; her sister, Shirley Mead of Hopewell Junction; her brother, William Diener and his wife, Shirley of Beacon and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her daughter Cynthia J. Cumming in 1977. A funeral service will be offered at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 23, 2010 at the Poughkeepsie United Methodist Church, 2381 New Hackensack Road, Poughkeepsie. Interment will be private in the family plot in Fishkill Rural Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Poughkeepsie United Methodist Church, 2381 New Hackensack Road, Poughkeepsie, NY 12603.
