Obituary of Nancy C. Smith

Nancy C. Smith Nancy C. Smith, 74, a longtime resident of Poughkeepsie, New York, died Friday, March 5, 2010 after a brief illness. She is survived by her loving husband of 43 years, Tom, and daughters and sons-in-law who adored her: Dori and her husband, Darren Smith of Williamston, NC; and Carolyn and her husband, Charles Dempster of Alexandria, VA. She was cherished by her three grandchildren: Zoe Amara, Cooper Thomas and Ava Makana. Nan was a graduate of Wellesley College and received her master's degree in Social Work from Adelphi University. After a satisfying career in her chosen field, she selflessly volunteered for hospice and the YWCA. She was an accomplished violist who enjoyed singing in her church choir and playing the piano. Her favorite pastimes were reading, painting, traveling to see her grandchildren and enjoying nature walks. Nan's deep-seated appreciation for nature, poetry and music inspired her to help those around her to discover their beauty. She was a person of quiet strength, whom her long-time friends and family relied on for inspiration and encouragement. Nan would so often lift their spirits with a humorous anecdote or a facetious remark, as it was in her self-deprecating nature to make those around her feel loved and fulfilled. Nan treasured her many friends and fellow parishioners at St. Nicholas-on-the-Hudson Episcopal Church in New Hamburg. Her funeral service will be held there at 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 11, 2010. Memorial donations may be made to the church in lieu of flowers; St. Nicholas-on-the-Hudson, 37 Point Street, New Hamburg, NY 12590.
