Obituary of Della G. Place

Della G. Place Della G. Place of Poughkeepsie entered into rest Friday, May 14, 2010 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center. She was 85. Daughter of the late Hasbrouck and Lillian Morgan Palmateer, she was born on November 14, 1924 in Poughkeepsie. She was married to George Place, Sr.; Mr. Place preceded her in death, passing in 2003. Mrs. Place was raised in Wappingers Falls, attending Wappingers Schools. In the 1950's she relocated to Poughkeepsie where she raised her own family. She had formerly worked for Smith Bros. Cough Drops and Candy Land, both of Poughkeepsie. Her most important job was raising her family. Della made a warm and loving home for her husband and ten children for most of her life; her family was her everything. She also had a fondness for country music. Survivors include her children, Carol Place and her husband, Vinnie of Poughkeepsie; George H. Place, Jr. and his fianc�e, Deborah Jones of Pleasant Valley; Lillian Bacon and her fianc�, Ray Davies of Poughkeepsie; Willard Place and his fianc�e, Geraldine Jones of Poughkeepsie; Harriet Place and her fianc�, James of Poughkeepsie; John Place and his wife, Wendy of Poughkeepsie; George E. Place of Poughkeepsie; Carol Weil and her husband, Bill of Catskill; Shawn Place and his wife, Shanda of Poughkeepsie; and Blake Place of Rhinebeck; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Mrs. Place was predeceased by her brothers, Hasbrouck Palmateer, Jr. and Nathaniel Palmateer. Family will receive their friends on Monday, May 17, 2010 from 7 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday, May 18 from 12 noon to 2 p.m. at Straub, Catalano & Halvey Funeral Home, 55 East Main Street, Wappingers Falls, NY 12590. A funeral service will be held following visitation on Tuesday at 2 p.m. Interment will take place in the family plot at Wappingers Rural Cemetery, Wappingers Falls. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Della's name to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
