Obituary of Carol Hadek Garrity

Carol Hadek Garrity Carol Hadek Garrity of the Town of Poughkeepsie died on December 23, 2010 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie. She was 76. Daughter of the late William and Anna Mahoney Hadek, she was born on May 21, 1934 in the Bronx. She married John L. Garrity on October 24, 1959 in New York City; Mr. Garrity survives at home. Mrs. Garrity received a Bachelor in Mathematics from St. Joseph's College for Women in Brooklyn. She went on to work as a programmer for IBM in Poughkeepsie. For many years, Carol was very active in local politics and civics, serving as a Councilman for the Town of Poughkeepsie for 10 years. She also formerly acted as Deputy Supervisor for the Town of Poughkeepsie and as Chairman of the Tri-Municipal Sewer Commission. Carol was a member of St. Mary's Church in Wappingers Falls for fifty years. In her spare time, Mrs. Garrity enjoyed embroidery, knitting and rug hooking; formerly she was President of the National Rug Hookers Guild. She also had a love for African violets. In addition to her husband, Jack, she is survived by her sons, William Garrity and his wife, Deborah of Etna, NH, and John T. Garrity and his wife, Kathleen of Ballston Lake; daughters, Mary P. Garrity and her partner, Christene Murphy of Beacon, and Anne Garrity and her partner, Tom Johnson of Argyle; brother-in-law, Robert Garrity of Miami, FL; sister-in-law, Joan J. Garrity of Estes Park, CO; grandchildren, John Thomas, Mary Carol, Jeffrey Van, Helen Katie, Colleen and Connell; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her daughter, Carol Garrity, and her sister, Catherine Hadek. Visitation will be from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, December 26, 2010 at Straub, Catalano & Halvey Funeral Home, 55 East Main Street in Wappingers Falls. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, December 27 at 1 p.m. at St. Mary's Church, Clinton Street in Wappingers Falls. Interment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Wappingers Falls. Memorial donations may be made in Carol's name to St. Mary's Church, 11 Clinton Street, Wappingers Falls, NY 12590.
