Obituary of Winnifred F. Baxter
Winnifred F. Baxter
Winnifred F. Baxter of Lagrangeville entered into rest Saturday, April 30, 2011 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center. She was 70.
Daughter of the late Egbert and Catherine Moore Grant, she was born on October 9, 1940 in Trelawny, Jamaica. She married her childhood sweetheart and love of her life, Roy Baxter on March 21, 1970 in Brooklyn; Mr. Baxter survives at home in Lagrangeville.
Mrs. Baxter trained to become a registered nurse in England, later coming to the states in the 1960's to marry and raise her family. She had been in nursing in Dutchess County for over 40 years. Among the facilities she served, she acted as staff nurse for Vassar Brothers Hospital, head nurse at Victory Lake Nursing Home and finally, nurse for Elant at Wappingers Falls, where she worked for 17 years. Winnifred was also a very active member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in LaGrange. In her spare time, Winnie enjoyed crocheting, cooking and baking. She was famous for baking Jamaican patties, Easter buns and Christmas cakes, and mailing them every year to her family and friends. She was a loving wife and mother, very patient and gentle; she was truly a model person.
In addition to her husband, Roy, survivors include her children, Winsome (Donna) Baxter and Dionne Baxter, both of Miramar, FL, and Anthony Baxter and his wife, Donna of Raleigh, NC; son-in-law, Robert Louden of Stamford, CT; brothers, Kenneth Grant of Montego Bay, Jamaica, and Charles Grant (Panch) of St. Petersburg, FL; sisters, Elma Hawthorne of Westbury, Sylvia Grant of Ft. She was predeceased by her brothers, Dudley Grant, Roy Grant and Cedric Grant, and her sister, Violet Grant.
Family will receive their friends on Friday, May 6, 2011 from 2 to 4 p.m. at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 110 Overlook Road in LaGrange.
