Obituary of Dominic T. Areno

Dominic T. Areno Dominic T. Areno, a resident of Poughkeepsie, entered into rest Sunday, June 12, 2011 at Elant at Fishkill. He was 94. Son of the late Alexander and Mary Sculco Areno, he was born September 7, 1916 in Poughkeepsie. He married the love of his life, the former Antoinette Venditti on October 5, 1941 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Poughkeepsie. After sixty-two years of marriage, Mrs. Areno preceded him in death on September 27, 2004. Dominic proudly served his country during World War II in the United States Army. After receiving the Purple Heart in April of 1945, he was honorably discharged in November of that year. He worked as a pressman for Western Publishing in Poughkeepsie for forty-two years, retiring in 1978. He was a parishioner of St. Mary's Church in Wappingers Falls. In his younger years, Dominic enjoyed playing baseball and basketball. He also enjoyed working in the yard. Most importantly, he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. Survivors include his son, Thomas M. Areno and his wife, Wendy A. of Poughkeepsie; his brother, Alexander Areno of Glendale, Arizona; his four grandchildren, Stephen Paino of Poughkeepsie, Deborah Novick of Wappingers Falls, Christine Gemmel of Tampa, Florida and Nancy Paino of Fishkill; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by his daughter, Carol Ann Paino in 2002; his son-in-law, Vincent A. Paino, Jr.; his brothers, Fortunato and Vincent Areno; and his sister, Elizabeth Madden. Family will receive their friends from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 15, 2011 at Straub, Catalano and Halvey Funeral Home, 55 East Main Street, Wappingers Falls. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. on Thursday, June 16 at St. Mary's Church, Clinton Street in Wappingers Falls. Interment will follow in St. Peter's Cemetery, Salt Point Turnpike in Poughkeepsie. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Dominic's name to the American Macular Degeneration Foundation, PO Box 515, Northampton, MA 01061 or the Parkinson's Disease Foundation, 1359 Broadway, Suite 1509, New York, NY 10018.
