Obituary of Robert E. Lessner

Robert E. Lessner Robert E. Lessner, 77, of Wappingers Falls, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on July 25, 2011. The son of the late Lorraine and George Lessner, he was born January 9, 1934 in New York City. After serving as a sound and recording engineer with the United States Air Force Band in Washington, D.C., Bob worked in New York City as a sound engineer in television and films, including the cult classic "The Brain That Wouldn't Die." He also spent six years as the Chief Sound Engineer for Allen Funt's "Candid Camera." In 1967, Bob and his brother formed Beacon Broadcasting Corporation and became the owners of WBNR (AM) and in 1970, WSPK-FM (K104), subsequently buying WENE (AM) and WMRV (FM)in Binghamton, New York and WTHT in Portland, Maine. He was "Word Builder Bob" on the Mark Bolger show in the 80's. In 1994, they sold the radio stations, but continued to operate the tower site on Mt. Beacon until his retirement in 2006. In retirement, Bob enjoyed traveling and being with his grandchildren. Active in his community for over forty years, Bob touched many lives. He was secretary of the Beacon/Fishkill Kiwanis Club, a member of the New York State Broadcasters Association, the National Association of Broadcasters, and the Southern Dutchess Chamber of Commerce. He will be missed. He is survived by his devoted wife, of fifty-one years, Patricia (Heymann) Lessner; his loving daughters, Debra Gioquindo and husband Paul and Donna Green and husband Joseph; his son, Peter Lessner and wife Melissa; his brother, Alford Lessner and wife, Helen; his grandchildren, Michael and Melanie Gioquindo, Shane and Chase Green and Mathew, Kevin and Noah Lessner. Family will receive friends on Thursday, July 28, 2011 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Straub, Catalano & Halvey Funeral Home, 55 East Main Street, Wappingers Falls. Funeral services will be private. Shiva will be observed on Saturday, July 30, 2011 at 7 p.m. at the home of Helen and Alford Lessner in Newburgh. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Bob's name may be made to a favorite charity.
