Anthony "Tony" Fernandes
Anthony "Tony" Fernandes, Sr. a resident of Wappingers Falls and formerly of Yonkers entered into rest, Saturday January 26, 2008 at Wingate at Beacon. He was 84.
Son of the late Joseph and Candida Fernandes, he was born August 25, 1923 in Fall River, Massachusetts.
Tony proudly served his country during World War II in the United States Army, 713D Tank Battalion. He was honorably discharged in 1945.
In 1953, he married the former Loretta O'Brien at Our Lady of the Rosary Church in Yonkers. Tony was a custodian for the Archdiocese of New York for thirty years; he worked at Our Lady of the Rosary Church, Yonkers and St. Lucy's Church, Bronx. He was a member of the Habashaw Athletic Club in Yonkers. He was an award winning bowler, winning many championships. Tony was also an avid Yankee's fan, never missing a game on television. In his later years, he enjoyed playing bingo and the trips he took to the casinos. Most importantly, he was a wonderful father and grandfather. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by loving his children, Diane Fernandes of Hopewell Junction, Anthony Fernandes, Jr. and his wife, Midge of Mahopac, John Fernandes and his wife, Dorie of Fishkill and Robert Fernandes of Hopewell Junction; his sister, Olivia Krenza of New Jersey; his beloved grandchildren, Melissa Carringan and her husband, Billy, Michael and Matthew Thela, John, Jr. and Kristen Fernandes, Kelly Volpe and her husband, Jerry, John Weatherup and his wife, Daneen and Lyn Weatherup. He was "Poppy Tony" to his great-grandchildren, Nicholas, JayJay, John, Jr. and Bradyen Michael.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, Albert and David Fernandes.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm on Monday, January 28, 2008 at Straub, Catalano & Halvey Funeral Home, 55 East Main Street, Wappingers Falls.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 am on Tuesday, January 29 at St. Mary's Church, Clinton Street, Wappingers Falls.
Interment will follow in Fishkill Rural Cemetery, Route 9, Fishkill.
