Obituary of Fred D. Long

Fred D. Long, a lifelong resident of Poughkeepsie, passed away on January 18, 2014 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center, Poughkeepsie. He was 88 years old. Born on October 17, 1925 in Poughkeepsie, Fred was the son of Harold and Marion Shaw Long. Fred proudly served his country during World War II in the Army. He was a graduate of Brown University. On May 16, 1954 he married the former Joanne M. Quick. Mrs. Long predeceased Fred in 2004. Fred retired from IBM in Poughkeepsie after over thirty years of service. He was a devoted and faithful member of New Hackensack Reformed Church in Wappingers Falls. Fred is survived by his children, F. Dwight Long, Jr. and his wife, Debra of Midland Park, NJ, Kenneth J. Long and his wife, Deborah of Cary, NC, James R. Long and his wife, Ruth of Amsterdam, NY, William H. Long and his wife, Connie of Fredericksburg, VA and Nancy J. Roe and her husband, Douglas of Wappingers Falls; his twelve grandchildren; his brothers, H. Irving Long, Jr. of Lexington, KY and Robert S. Long and his wife, Julee of Cape Coral, FL; several nieces and nephews. Fred is also survived by his lifelong friend, Henry "Hank" Graham and his wife, Janice "Jay" Graham. In addition to his wife, Fred was predeceased by his brother, Arthur Long and his wife, Dorothy and his sister-in-law, Carolyn Long. Family will receive friends on Friday, January 24, 2014 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Straub, Catalano & Halvey Funeral Home, 55 East Main Street, Wappingers Falls, NY 12590. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 25, 2014 at 10 a.m. at New Hackensack Reformed Church, 1580 Route 376, Wappingers Falls. Interment will follow at Union Cemetery, 1076 Violet Ave, Hyde Park. Memorial donations in memory of Fred may be made to either Dutchess Outreach, 29 N.
