I met Joe in 1986 at Hastings-on-Hudson High School. He was my drama teacher. He was warm, funny, and intelligent, but what I most remember about him was how he caring and loving he was. I had moved to the area from Michigan and was new in HHS. He mentored me and guided me; I poured out my troubles and he always listened and was gently encouraging. He saw I was interested in learning how to play piano but since I had no piano to practice on at home, arranged for me to practice during lunch at school. He was that kind of teacher. A person who went above and beyond, all the time. A person who genuinely cared, and that was shown in his actions. His care and love improved my life and allowed me to mature and better care for others. My only regret is that we lost touch, because I would want him to know how much he meant and what a great impact he had. He is a wonderful human being who made my life richer and brighter and he will never be forgotten. Aaron Karnell

Mary & Family, So sad to hear of Joe's passing. He is a great man and will remain forever in our hearts and memories. It was always a pleasure to see him stroll into my office and we would always take a few minutes from our busy day to chat and exchange stories. If we only knew then how quickly it would all change, maybe we would have spent more time chatting and less time working. Deepest condolences to all, Jim LaChance

I originally met Joe through a mutual friend back when I was attending Dutchess Community College. He was always very nice. Then later on through the food pantry at the Zion Church. Rest peacefully Joe. My deepest condolences to his family & friends!

To the Porpora Family, I was so saddened to hear of Joe's passing this morning. The memory of the time I spent talking and working with Joe are well remembered. He was a force of nature. I could always count on interesting conversations, witty humor and a caring awareness. The time spent working on the Friday dinners was filled with laughter. His commitment to others was very strong. His love for his family and joy for their accomplishments was so strong. Conversations with Joe were never dull. He had such a strong opinion on many subjects and was very articulate in expressing them. Many of these opinions came with a great deal of humor which was refreshing. He will be very much missed by all who knew him. May the wonderful memories of his love for you help you through this very difficult time. He was so special. Thinking of you. Peace be with you.
